There are some obvious differences between young and old people. Old people often have poor health and are less physically fit. On the other hand, some old people have a lot of stamina. Young people are more interested in what the future may bring. Old people may contemplate their past more often. They reflect on the memories when they were young. Young people usually live in a hurry, usually have a lot to do, are always running out of time. Elderly people live more peacefully and slowly, which means they may be more caring and mindful than younger people. This is not a rule, of course, more of a tendency. There’re a lot of things which older people can teach younger generations. They’ve lived through different hardships and know what is important in life. They can give us a good perspective on life. That’s what my grandparents taught me. But they also taught me how to stay calm, how to achieve work-life balance. I’m not afraid of getting old, but I am afraid of death, end of life as I know it. But I don’t spend much time thinking about it. There’s no point. I hope to have a long and happy life, and when I retire I’d like to live peacefully in the country, plant flowers in a garden and have a lot of time to read books.

[przykładowe odpowiedzi]

  • Well, if I were to choose, I’d like to live in a flat. It’s easier to take care of it. You don’t need to mow the lawn, prune the bushes or trees you have in the garden. You don’t need to worry about a leaking roof or removing snow in front of your house in the winter. Of course, not having a garden may be a disadvantage for some people. It’s nice to have some privacy outside. But I could manage with a balcony. Nowadays flats don’t have to be small. Some flat are of 80 or 90 square meters. There is probably one major disadvantage to living in a flat – neighbours. Sometimes, you can almost hear everything that say when they argue or speak loudly. On the other hand, if you live in a house, you can also have nasty neighbours.
  • I’d like to live in a terraced house because it sounds like a compromise between a detached house and a flat. You get a small garden, a garage, you can plant some trees. I’ve been living in a flat for the last couple of years and I’m happy about it. It has four bedrooms, so everyone has some private space. We have a big kitchen, a balcony and a spacious living room.

[przykładowa odpowiedź]

1.

I’ve attended public schools my whole life and they are OK. It’s hard to say whether I’d prefer private ones. In my opinion, each type of school has its advantages and disadvantages. Public schools are free, and private schools can be very expensive. They can cost hundreds of Polish zloty per month. Public schools are overpopulated. Nowadays there’re often more than 30 students in each form in high schools and in primary schools over 27. In private schools, there’re between 15 and 20 pupils in each form. The smaller number of students, the better. Then the teacher can focus more on each student during a lesson, and the relationships are usually better. In both type of schools students may be forced to wear uniforms, but nowadays I think there are maybe only a few public schools which have uniforms. Another advantage of private schools is schools trips. They organise definitely more schools trips than public schools. Both types of schools have extracurricular classes.

2.

Well, school subjects for the future. That’s a hard question. We should know some IT, so definitely some computer skills should be taught. Also, students should have maths, but very practical maths so they understand loans and prices, and offers. During biology and chemistry lessons, we should focus more on practical things such as healthy food, protection of the environment. We should also understand the law better, and learn communication and negotiation skills.

3.

The internet can be very helpful in education. Student just need to learn how to use it to their advantage, and that’s not always easy. We mostly copy without even understanding what it all is. Also, online teaching is possible, but I don’t like online teaching because I don’t have enough discipline. Interactive whiteboards usually don’t work very well. They take a lot of time, but are not useful. Overhead projectors, on the other hand, are very helpful if the teacher has interesting stuff to show and discuss.

I’m a very active and curious person, and I think that I’d like to be a scientist. This means I’ll probably be working for someone: a private laboratory or a university. But I have nothing against it. For me it’s even better. I have less organisational matters to worry about. Being a scientist means that I cannot really work from home. I have to be in a laboratory. Also, I like working in a team. You can achieve a lot more collaborating with other people. I may consider working for an international company if they offer better working conditions, bonuses, multisport cards. If necessary, I’ll work long hours and stay after hours, but I’d rather not do that very often. I don’t want my job to outbalance my whole life. I don’t want to work my whole life doing the same stuff over and over again. I’d like to develop. I’d like to get promoted, too. Last but not least, I’d like to earn a good living. I don’t need to be rich, but I’d like to have a comfortable life.

I don’t think it’s easy to answer this question. In my life, my close family, my parents and my grandparents, are as important as my friends. That’s because I don’t have many friends. The word friendship means a lot to me. I have maybe two or three best friends. They’re equally important. I don’t just have one best friend. Of course, I have acquaintances, too. But they’re not that important. At least once a month, I meet and hang out with each of my friends. We go to restaurants, museums, art galleries, cinemas. We walk together a lot. On the other hand, I get on well with my parents. Sometimes, we argue, but I think it’s normal. My family isn’t big. I don’t have many distant relatives, but I have grandparents. I visit them every two or three weeks. Among all my family members, I have the closest bond with my mum, I think. We talk a lot. We discuss many things happening in my life and in general. She’s very important to me. I feel safe with her. There’s no need to compare family and friends; they can be equally important.

In my opinion healthy eating means having a balanced diet. A diet which doesn’t lack any nutritional value. This means eating enough carbs, fats and proteins. Depending on the level of your physical activity. I think we should eat four or five meals a day. Small portions but regularly. There should be a lot of fruit and vegetables in our diet because they have a lot of vitamins and other useful chemicals, and they are high in fibre. And what’s more – the less processed food we eat, the better for our health. Organic and ecologically grown vegetables, fruits, grain are better for our health. They don’t contain bad substances such as herbicides. It’s the same with meat and fish. They both have more nutritional value if they come from good sources. I think we should eat meat maximum three times a week. Fish maybe one or two times per week. And of course, we can’t forget about water. It’s very important to drink at least 1,5 litters of water per day.

I prefer shopping offline. No matter what I’m buying. Food, clothes, shoes, electronic devices. For me, it’s important to see something before I buy it. If it’s food, I want to make sure it’s fresh. If clothes or shoes, first I want to try them on. See if they fit me, and of course if they suit me. When you shop online, you probably have a wider variety of products available. But it doesn’t discourage me from going to the shop. Sometimes, there are quite nice bargains and sales in online shops. The truth is there are also sales in regular shops which aren’t on the websites of those shops. So it’s a win-win situation for everyone. I think that nowadays you can buy practically everything online. Probably one thing is offered on a few different websites at different prices. I think there isn’t one good answer to the question which type of shopping is more convenient. Each of us has their preferences. For me, traditional shopping is more convenient because I can try things on, see them, I don’t have to wait for delivery, there’s always someone from sales staff to help me.

My favourite way of spending summer holidays is sightseeing. That’s because I like discovering new places. I’m really into history, and for me, it’s an amazing feeling when I hear all those stories of people who lived in a particular place hundreds of years ago. I usually go on sightseeing trips with travel agencies. Alone or with my friends. Trips in Europe usually take 7 to 10 days, and that’s long enough for me. There’s enough to see the most impressive buildings, visit museums and explore attractive places on your own. During my trips, I normally stay in comfortable hotels. I like when they serve breakfast and dinner, and are close to the city centre or a subway station. That’s the most convenient option for me. If it’s possible, I choose to travel by plane because it’s the fastest and the most comfortable option. Of course, I’m also open to other types of holidays, but I must say I like comfort, so I don’t think I’d ever choose to sleep in a tent.

I’m a very active person, so I’m really into hiking. It’s been my hobby since primary school. That’s when I started going to the mountains with my parents. First, we went the mountains nearby, and later higher ones, which are far away from my hometown. I didn’t really have a choice while taking up this hobby because my parents just started organising those hiking trips and took me with them every time. Actually, I’m happy they did. I enjoy mountains very much. We used to go hiking almost every week when I was in primary school, but now when I’m in high school, we do it maybe once a month. Sometimes, every two or three months because there’s less free time. This hobby isn’t very expensive, but you need some money to do it. We travel by car, so we need to pay for the fuel. And when it comes to equipment, you need proper hiking boots, hiking clothes such as special t-shirts, shorts and trousers (depending on the weather) and a backpack. Hiking is a lot of fun. It’s tiring but relaxing at the same time. You are close to nature, so you can calm down.

I prefer individual sports. In individual sports, your results fully reflect your work and dedication. There are no other teammates which can influence the score of the match or the overall result in a competition. You and your coach can be credited for your victories and blamed for defeats. Plus, I prefer individual sports probably because I like working on my own. I’m an individualist. That’s why I used to play chess in primary school. I even took part in some tournaments. From time to time, I also like playing volleyball and basketball with my friends. Just for fun. I’ve never played those team sports in a school team. There’s only one sport I don’t really like. It’s football. I find it really boring. I don’t understand how it’s possible that so many people are so much into it. I occasionally watch some sports on TV. Usually the Olympics. Both summer and winter Olympic games. I find athletics and some winter sports such as ski jumping very interesting. I believe sports can also be very dangerous. Especially team sports such as rugby or ice hockey. You can get seriously injured while playing them. I don’t think individual sports involve such a risk.

In my opinion, it’s very important for each person to regularly see the doctor and get medical check-ups. Those check-ups should be done once a year or even twice a year if you’re over forty. Depending on their type. For example, blood tests should be run once a year. It’s a simple and fast test, but at the same time, it can show abnormalities at early stages of a disease. We can also undergo a general physical examination done by our general practitioner. I think that basic regular check-ups should be mandatory for both kids and adults. That’s because they can help us and doctors discover potential illnesses very fast. So that they don’t develop into serious ones. Prevention is always better than cure. Medical check-ups aren’t the only thing if we want to stay healthy. We should exercise, do some sports or other types of physical activity. And we must eat a healthy diet. We mustn’t spend too much time in front of a computer screen. Also, taking care of our emotions and moods is very important. Having friends helps you stay healthy, too.

In my opinion, a very useful technological achievement is the mobile phone. The first mobiles didn’t resemble today’s smartphones at all, but they were portable. So you were able to call other people practically from anywhere in the world, whenever you wanted. Not only from your house. It was expensive but possible. I think in the beginning, it helped businesspeople run their companies. And later it helped everyone. Parents can always contact their children. If you see an accident, you can immediately make an emergency call. Apparently, the only disadvantage of modern smartphones is that people get addicted to them, and large corporations start controlling them; they are like zombies. They always have to check something on their phones. They seem to be more interested in the virtual world than in the real one. Smartphones make your life easier in many ways. On any type of electronic device which has access to the Internet you can manage your bank account or use the GPS to find your way. You can talk to or text people around the world, do the shopping, read news, watch films. Everything seems to be okay as long as you see your smartphone as a tool, a useful and versatile tool, but still a tool, like a hammer, for instance. On the other hand, when you hold you phone in your hand almost all the time, it probably means your life is far less enjoyable than it could be, because it’s not real.

In my opinion, the natural environment is in danger first of all because of human activity. All those cars we drive pollute the air. Factories dump sewage into rivers and pollute water as well as ground. This often results in the extinction of many plants and animals. This is not good for the environment. Also, people produce thousands of tons of rubbish every year. And they just put it all in one place. Only a small percentage is somehow recycled and reused. More and more trees are being cut down. As a result, we have deforestation, which means that less oxygen is produced. Possibly, some natural disasters contribute to destruction of the natural environment. Volcano eruptions, floods, hurricanes. They also pose a threat to the environment. If we want to protect it, we shouldn’t fly planes a lot, instead of driving a car, we should choose public transport. It is alarmingly necessary to use renewable sources of energy such as water, wind and solar energy. Recycling our rubbish is essential. We can also try to waste less food and compost leftovers.

Modern technology and the Internet have dominated both our private life and professional career. That’s why I think that social networking is very useful. Especially websites such as LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram. I use all of them apart from LinkedIn. Via WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, you can keep in touch with your family and friends, share moments from your life. And all that for free. If you have access to the Internet, of course. LinkedIn is a great tool which can help you develop your professional career. It’s also a way your future employer can verify your qualifications, skills, projects you’ve done, people you’ve worked with. It increases your credibility. Nevertheless, there are some disadvantages of social media. A lot of fake news spread very fast. Quite often, our data and other personal information isn’t well protected. Sometimes, it’s even sold to other companies. And some people get addicted to social media.

[przykładowy dialog; A – uczeń, B – egzaminator]

A: This month, my parents and I are moving to Sheffield. My mum got a new better-paid job there.

B: And what about your dad?

A: He works from home, so for him I doesn’t matter where we live. Anyway, this week we’re packing the last things: clothes, shoes, bags, books and some electronic devices.

B: Do you need any help with packing?

A: I appreciate your offer, but no, thanks. We’re almost finished, and the moving company will take care of the rest: our beds, wardrobes, my bookcase and some kitchen appliances. The remaining furniture and house appliances will be either sold or thrown out. That’s because our new flat is smaller and we don’t need that many things in there.

B: Don’t you think the smaller flat will be less comfortable?

A: Not at all, it’s only 10m2 smaller and located in the city centre, in a very nice modern building. And my new school is just one kilometre away, so it’s very convenient. I’ll be able to get there on foot.

B: Do you know anything about your new school? Classmates and teachers?

A: Actually, I’ve just met three of my new classmates this week. We’ve exchanged some e-mails, and tomorrow, we’ll have a Zoom meeting to get to know each other better.

B: Great.

[przykładowa wypowiedź, przykładowe pytania egzaminatora]

In the picture I can see a group of seven friends. They’re sitting at a coffee table. They seem to be having a lot of fun playing a kind of board game. They are probably high school students. Playing board games may be their way of spending time together. They’re at home, most likely in the living room because in the background there is an armchair, a lamp, a bookshelf. They’re casually dressed, so they’ve probably just came here after their classes or it might be weekend, so they don’t have any lessons. Maybe after the game they will order a pizza or cook something and watch a movie or rather a TV series together.

1. Why do you think board games are still quite popular?

Board games may be popular for different reasons. The internet has made it easier for people to find out about them. Also, you can find the rules in the Internet. Crowdfunding means more different board games are being published. Producers can get money in this way, to promote their ideas. People are trying to reduce their screen time. They like the idea of getting together and having fun. It's also a kind of competition and a lot of people like to compete.

2. What do you like doing in your free time?/ What would you do if you had more free time?

In my free time I like reading books. I love fantasy books and my favourite is Lord of the Rings. I know I’m not very original but fantasy books let me escape from boring reality. My second favourite pastime is going to the cinema with my friends or my siblings. I usually go to watch a film once a week. And from time to time, I also go to the theatre or opera, but not very often.

3. What kind of games did you play in primary school?

In our P.E. lessons we used to play football, basketball and volleyball a lot. Once every few months, we went running in the park, which was near our school. And in my free time, when I was at primary school, my friends and I used to just run around the playground and play some silly games. We also spent a lot of time playing computer games on our smartphones. Sometimes, we also played board games.

ZADANIE 3 STR. 49

[przykładowa wypowiedź, przykładowe pytania egzaminatora]

I’d definitely choose picture number one, that is the laptop. Its screen is big enough to open and edit a few files at the same time, as well as a search engine and some professional databases. Plus a laptop has much more memory and a strong battery, so it can work for many hours without recharging. At the same time, it’s portable, so you can either put it in a special bag or in your regular bag and take it with you when you go home or anywhere else you might need it.

I’d never ask an employer for a tablet, because I don’t like working with a touch screen. It’s very difficult to touch and select some options on it, or write something in an Excel file. Moreover, such glass touch screen can break easily, even if you put some protecting glass on it.

I wouldn’t choose a smartphone either. Its screen is too small. You can’t see all the details and if you want to, you must zoom in the page, but then you don’t see other pieces of information in an e-mail or a file. Another disadvantage of a smartphone is its battery: if you use this device (and the internet) for 6 or 7 hours, you must recharge it. So sometimes it needs charging twice a day, or you have to carry a power bank with you, whenever you go. On the other hand, you need a smartphone for your work usually.

1. Do you think all employers should give their employees electronic devices for free?

If such a device is necessary for them to work – yes. It’s the employers’ duty to provide their employees with a suitable workspace as well as all the necessary devices to perform work.

2. Which electronic devices do you actually use and find most useful?

In my everyday life, it’s definitely my smartphone: with it, I text people, write e-mails, search the internet, take photos. When it comes to studying, it’s my laptop.

3. Do you think it is still possible to work without computers or smartphones?

Yes, of course. It all depends on the job you have. There are still a lot of jobs, such as a construction worker, hairdresser, miner, where you don’t need any electronic devices. However, very often people expect you to have a smartphone to respond to their messages or answer their phone calls.

4. Do you think that AI and the so called technological disruption will be a problem in the future?

I’m not afraid of AI, not really. On the other hand, for instance in China, due to new technologies, people can be followed all the time. This is scary. Also, some smart machines may take our jobs away in the future? What will happen then? What will the unemployed people do?

A: Me and a few of my friends belong to a movie club. It’s really amazing. And Jennifer and I came up with the idea of Cinema Day a couple of weeks ago. Last Friday, we asked our class tutor if we could organize the event and he agreed.

B: Wow, that’s great. What’s in the event programme?

A: Cinema Day will take place on the 25th of March. It’s a Friday. It’s going to start at 4 p.m., after our lessons. There will be three screenings at the same time, three different movies, so that everyone can choose what they’d like to watch. The films will finish around 6-6:30 p.m., and then there’ll be a discussion, or rather discussions about those three movies.

B: And what do you need to do to organise the event? Are any teachers involved, too?

A: Jennifer and I will conduct surveys in all forms to find out what films students would like to see and discuss. And the top three will be shown. We will also arrange everything in the classrooms, put aside the desks and suchlike. Each person who wants to take part in the event should bring something to drink, and if they want to, some snacks. Three teachers agreed to supervise the event, one in each classroom.

B: Would you like me to help you with the preparations?

A: Thank you, I’d be grateful. Each pair of hands is needed. The more people will come to help us, the faster we’ll have the job done.

In the picture, I can see a family, probably: mum, dad and daughter. They’re casually dressed. They’re wearing jeans, some blouses and trainers. They’re in a shopping centre, doing the shopping. They already have quite a lot of bags with the things they bought. They seem to enjoy shopping, because they’re all smiling. They’re looking at something on their right side, maybe a shop or something else caught their attention. In the background, I can see a red-and-white piece of decoration, which looks like a candy cane, so it may be Christmas season. They may be buying Christmas gifts for their friends and other family members.

1. How often do you go grocery shopping? If you don’t, then who buys groceries in your family?

I buy groceries once or twice a week. This is my job. Sometimes mom helps me, but mostly I go alone with a mile-long shopping list. It usually takes me more than two hours before I buy ever single item on the shopping list. I go to the nearby supermarket by car.

2. What is your opinion about online shopping? Have you got any experience of buying things online?

I’m a little afraid of buying clothes or shoes online because you never know if they’ll fit you or not, and I don’t have the time to send those packages back and forth. So I usually buy only books or electronic devices like headphones online. In general, shopping online makes your life easier. You can find the item you really need. On the other hand, you need to be careful not to fall for a scam. You may always get cheated, that is you pay and they don’t send anything.

3. Tell us about one thing you recently bought online or in a traditional shop. What was it? Why did you buy it?

A few weeks ago, I bought a pair of converse sneakers. I bought the shoes online. I searched the Internet for the model I liked and then I paid for it by BLIK, and after two days I could put the sneakers on. Fortunately, they were a good fit and I didn’t have to send them back.

[przykładowa wypowiedź, przykładowe pytania egzaminatora]

If I were to go on summer holidays with my friend, I would definitely try to convince them to choose a house by the lake, near a village, next to the forest. For sure, such a place will be peaceful and quiet. No traffic, zero noise. Only the sound of singing birds. And there’s a lot you can do there. You can go cycling, kayaking, swimming in the lake, go for a walk in the forest, and if it’s warm enough and sunny, I’m sure you can even sunbathe. Usually, there is a landing pier, so you can go sailing.

I’d reject the offer of hotel at the beach. Those places are always noisy, kids are running around, and the hotel beach is always crowded. Plus, there are not many attractions for adults in such hotels.

I wouldn’t like to go camping either, because I don’t like sleeping in a tent and having no bathroom or kitchen. This is just too complicated for me. It takes a long time to find a place to take a shower or even brush your teeth.

1. Have you ever gone camping? If not, would you like to?

Yes, I have, but I didn’t like it. I don’t really like nature, and all those insects and bugs which can come to your tent. Plus, if the weather is bad, if it’s rainy, windy or even stormy, you tent can be damaged, it can leak. Even if it doesn’t happen, it’s often loud outside and you can’t sleep. Camping doesn’t seem to be for me.

2. When you go on holiday, which means of transport do you use? Why?

If I go on holiday in Poland, I usually travel by car or by train (if I go with my friends), but if I travel abroad, I always choose a plane. It’s so much faster and more comfortable. The car is expensive but convenient because you can stop whenever you like. On the other hand, you have to drive, and on the train, you can sleep.

3. Could you tell us about your dream holiday? Where would you go? What would you do?

I don’t know, really. I think I’d like to cycle with some friends of mine around the Mediterranean Sea. I’d like to have a lot of time for it. I’d like to stay in different places as long as I wanted. I’d like to meet local people and visit places, and sleep in places that are off the beaten track.

4. What things do you do in your summer holidays that you don’t do otherwise?

I go mushrooming, I learn to play new songs on my guitar, I hunt for insects and spiders and identify them, I read a lot of poetry or I simply do nothing. Yeah, summer holidays are good for all of those, especially for doing nothing. Hunting and identifying bugs really takes a lot of time. You observe, take a picture, study books on insects. I also like improvising during the holiday. I just wake up and wait for ideas to come.

A: Well, our biology project needs to be done by Friday. On Saturday and Friday, there’s the school fair, so we won’t have time to do it then. And our group will be the first to give their presentation on Monday. Why don’t we meet after school on Friday, say, around 5 p.m.?

B: Sounds great for me. What are we going to include in our project?

A: Well, we need to present different ways of protecting our natural environment. Let’s talk about air pollution in big cities and using non-renewable natural resources. What do you say?

B: OK. I think this is a good idea, but it is very hard to stop it, isn’t it? How can we stop using natural resources?

A: Of course, we can do it. This situation won’t improve overnight, but by using renewable resources such as water and wind energy more and more often, we’ll be able to breathe clean air. We should also use public transport instead of cars; we could cycle more.

B: Your ideas are fine. Let’s present them. How are we going to do it?

A: How about a PowerPoint presentation? People like photographs. We could show several interesting slides.

B: Don’t you think that a speech would be more convincing, more dramatic? And it would take less time to prepare it.

A: Well, I don’t agree with you; I’m afraid of public speaking, but we could discuss it on Thursday with the rest of our team when we all meet.

B: Okay.

In the picture, I can see a small group of children and a woman, probably in a museum. This must be the section about ancient Greece or Rome. In the background, there are sculptures that look ancient, like ancient rulers or philosophers. The kids may be ten or eleven years old. The woman is talking to them, probably explaining what the figures are. Most likely, those kids are on a school trip, and now they’re visiting a museum. They all have colourful backpacks and seem to be interested in what the guide is telling them. Or maybe when they come back to school, they’ll have to make a presentation or a project about the paintings or sculptures they’ve seen in the museum.

1. How many museums or galleries, do you think, you have visited in your life? What are your memories of those visits?

Hmm, it’s hard to tell, maybe 20 or 30 museums and galleries. I generally like visiting museums and art galleries. I’m really into modern art, and there are two museums in my town which exhibit modern sculptures and paintings. And there’re new exhibitions only once or twice a year. When I visit a museum, I try to focus on one or two paintings, and I tell myself stories about the paintings. Who are the people in the painting? What was their life like? What did they do for a living? I also like looking closely at all the details in the paintings I choose.

2. When it comes to visual arts, do you prefer paintings or sculptures? Why?

I prefer paintings. In my opinion, there’s more depth in a painting than in a sculpture. Plus, paintings are usually more colourful and display a historical scene or a battle. Sculptures have no life in them. Well, most of them.

3. Tell us about a situation when you particularly liked or disliked a piece of art. Tell us about you past experience with works of art.

Well, let me think. I once saw some figures made by Magdalena Abakanowicz. They’re called abakans. They are headless iron figures. I saw quite a few of them. You know, they are popular almost all over the world. I was wondering why. I don’t know, really. I think that people can identify with the figures, like put their heads on them. I spent like half an hour watching the figures and felt nothing.

In my free time, I really enjoy reading books. My favourite genres are fantasy and science fiction. The best season to read books is autumn. It’s an amazing feeling to sit in a park and read a book when the weather is fine, of course. I like long novels with a complex plot and new worlds created by the authors. Interestingly, these worlds resemble our world in many ways, yet they’re different, somewhat better. Books are fun, but you can also gain a new perspective on your life.

I’d reject picture number two, because hanging out with friends is definitely not my favourite pastime. After a tiring day at school, I like to go home and have a quiet, peaceful evening. I sometimes meet with my friends, but I don’t consider it a hobby, really.

I enjoy going to the theatre once every two or three months, when there’s a new interesting play, but I wouldn’t say it’s my favourite way of spending free time. I just watch the play and enjoy it or not.

1. What are the most popular ways of spending free time among teenagers?

In general, teenagers like hanging out with their friends; some of them like playing sports, such as football or basketball. Some go window shopping and hang out in the shopping malls. Quite a lot of them, I think, like staying at home, watching series on Netflix or HBO.

2. Why do you think so few people like opera or theatre nowadays? Do you think it makes sense to encourage them to go and see theatrical plays or opera performances? Why? Why not?

I do like theatre, but I think nowadays rather few people aged 15–25 go to the opera or theatre more or less regularly. I don’t know why. Some plays or opera performances are quite good. There’s a lot going on the stage, actors have beautiful costumes, stories are interesting. In some theatres, there are even special effects.

3. Which benefit of reading books do you value the most: gaining knowledge, exercising your brain, improving your memory or entertaining yourself? Why? Why not?

I like the books that are entertaining. I just want to find myself in a different world. I know there’s a lot of information in books, but I prefer to search for information online. I like sitting with a book and forgetting about the world.

4. Tell us about your hobby. What hobby would you take up if you had more time? What would you need to start it?

When I was a child I used to play basketball with my siblings a few times a week. It was our favourite pastime. Now I don’t have enough time to play. If I had more time, I’d start playing basketball again. It’s a team game, so you need to cooperate with other people. You also need to keep fit to play basketball. All you need to play the game is a sports costume and a pair of good trainers, and a ball of course. It is not really an expensive hobby.

A: So, when it comes to our plans for Saturday evening. I was thinking that we could check out that new British restaurant – Nottingham House. It’s located in Flower Street. It opens at 3 p.m. I could book a table if you like.

B: Okay, I think it’s a good idea. Quite original.

A: Great. I’ve checked their menu and the reviews on TripAdvisor, so I’d go for chicken salad as a starter and shepherd’s pie as a main course. People say that they serve the pie with a modern twist. I can’t wait to try it.

B: Okay. Please, send me the link to the menu so that I can check it out before we go there.

A: Sure. And there’s one little problem. Nottingham House doesn’t serve desserts. I was thinking that we could go and have some ice-cream. There’s a cosy café nearby.

B: I don’t really like ice-cream.

A: Oh, okay. What about a piece of really tasty cake? They serve absolutely amazing chocolate and lemon cake.

In the picture, I can see seven young people. Five of them are sitting at the table and two are standing next to that table. This is probably they workspace. Some of them may be discussing some new projects, one woman is working on a tablet, two men are writing something on their laptops and the man and the woman who are standing may be exchanging their opinions. There’s also a whiteboard, on which they can write their ideas, remarks, questions, some graphs. Next to the whiteboard, there’s a small coffee table and an armchair, where you can sit, eat and relax.

1. Why are there glass walls on both side of the table?

The purpose of those glass walls is probably to separate each workspace, where a particular team is sitting and working or taking a rest. As a result, it’s not so noisy and you hear only your colleagues, the people who you’re working with.

2. Which electronic gadget do you most often use while studying? Why?

I think it’ll probably be my computer. I have my notes and textbooks in pdf files on it. Occasionally, I use my smartphone to look up some information online, but it’s my computer mostly. I often watch lectures or lessons on YouTube as well.

3. Tell us when you first got a smartphone. What did you use it for first? How did you feel about it?

I didn’t actually get my first smartphone. I bought it myself. My parents didn’t really want to buy me a smartphone, so I saved up enough money to buy it. It took me a while, but finally I was able to buy a cheap one. I was pretty happy with it. I used it first to text my friends and use Facebook.

I would definitely want to live in a terraced house, because there is enough space for each member of the family. Each has own room and there’s usually a guest room, a living room, and sometimes even a separate dining room. Plus, you usually have a backyard. It’s normally a very small garden, but it’s somewhere to sit and relax. Besides, terraced houses are less expansive that big detached houses and the mortgage is more affordable.

I don’t want to live in a detached house, because it’s too big for me and my family. And it’s hard to keep a large house. You need to mow a big lawn, sometimes the roof leaks. And you have two or three floors to vacuum at least once a week, and I don’t like chores.

I don’t want to live in a block of flats either because there are too many people in a relatively small place. You here your neighbours, you hear them quarrelling. When someone who lives next door returns home or leaves very early or very late, you can hear them shutting the door and talking in the hall.

1. What type of building do you live in? What are the advantages and disadvantages of living in it?

I live in a semi-detached house. I live with my parents and my brother. My grandparents with my aunt and uncle are our neighbours. The advantage of this type of house is having a garden with a couple of trees and space to play games and grow some vegetables.

2. What’s it like to live in a large block of flats?

Well, you don't have a garden, but you never have to worry about dealing with a broken boiler or blocked drains. Also, being on the fourth floor, it would be impossible for anyone to break into our property from the outside. You just need a good door. There are a lot of neighbours, but they can also be friendly and helpful people so your life is easier.

3. What facilities should a neighbourhood where parents with kids live have?

First of all, a playground or even playgrounds so that the children have space to play and have fun. It would be nice to also have a kindergarten nearby, so that you don’t waste any additional time driving your kids to some distant kindergarten. Also, a clinic nearby is very convenient for parents. Children often get sick and need help.

4. Do you prefer old or modern buildings? Why?

I prefer modern buildings because there’ve got brad new installations, pipes etc. And you don’t have to worry about repairing them. Plus, those building have better isolation, so it’s colder in the summer and warmer in winter. Old buildings are often damp and cold.

A: In Poland, we study for four years in high school. After the final year, we take exams called matura. In the final exam, compulsory subjects are Polish, maths and one foreign language. In 99% of schools you get grades: 1is the poorest grade and 6 is the best, with pluses and minuses. But there are also some schools in which you collect points and after two terms you get a final mark on your report card based on the number of points you’ve collected.

B: An how about classrooms? Are they well equipped? Does each subject have a separate classroom?

A: It varies from to school to school. Some schools which are in older buildings have big classrooms with high ceilings and some old equipment and teaching aids for biology or geography lessons. I mean all those fossils, rocks and maps. But if you’re lucky and your school is in a new building, the classrooms can look really nice. And they have interactive whiteboards, projectors and brand new educational aids.

B: And does each school have a sports hall and other facilities like a swimming pool or tennis court?

A: Each school normally has a gym and a pitch outside so that students can do sports during P.E. lessons, but when it comes to other facilities, there’s maybe one or two schools in my city with a swimming pool or tennis courts.

B: Do schools offer extracurricular classes?

A: Yes. Quite a lot. There’re always sports clubs in which you can play football, basketball, volleyball or other sports. Plus, there’re usually extra lessons for students who want to prepare for competitions. Sometimes, there’re also art clubs. What’s more, usually during your final year, you have extra classes to prepare you better for the final exams.

In the picture, I can see two dinner tables and four chairs. They’re probably at a restaurant. On the table in the background, there’re only two empty glasses and some napkins. On the table in the foreground, there are dishes waiting to be eaten. There’s fish, some salads, fruit and wine in glasses. Some people must have left their glasses on this table, so they’ll probably be back in a minute. When I look at the interior of this restaurant, I’d say it’s really posh and expensive. It looks like a place for some business meetings, important celebrations. There’s no one sitting at the table, but both tables are set, so this restaurant may open any minute. Or maybe the table in the background is booked for a specific hour and is waiting for its customers.

1. Do you prefer to cook at home, eat in a restaurant or order takeout?

I definitely prefer to cook at home. I enjoy simple dishes which can be prepared really fast, so I don’t waste much time in the kitchen. Plus, when I’m cooking I have some time to listen to some audiobooks or watch videos on YouTube. Of course, I occasionally order takeout, but it’s usually lower quality food.

2. What does healthy eating mean?

In my opinion eating healthy means having a balanced diet. Such diet should be based on ecological and fresh ingredients: meat and fish once or twice a week, some vegetarian meals. lots of well-seasoned vegetables. But it doesn’t mean that you cannot eat sweets. Or fast food. You can, but once in a while, not every week. You mustn’t forget that healthy eating is not only what you eat but also how much you eat; even overeating very healthy food is bad to your health.

3. When did you last eat out? What did you have? Where was it?

Last week, I went to a newly opened Japanese restaurant with my friends. The restaurant is not far from the place where I live. I ordered sushi of course. For the first time in my life. And I must admit it was really tasty, so I’ll be eating it more often now. It’s quite expensive, though.

If I were to celebrate one event with my friends, I’d definitely choose Halloween. It’s a really interesting celebration which came to Poland from English speaking countries. My friends and I could watch scary movies. Nightmare before Christmas is the best Halloween movie I know. Or dress up or even go outside and go trick or treating in our neighbourhood. Like those kids in picture number one. Well, I think we’re too old for that last one. But still, we could have so much fun together. You could bake witch fingers cookies. They look horrible. You could also decorate the house in a scary way.

I wouldn’t like to spend Easter with my friends because there’s not much to do. You can only meet for breakfast, paint and eat some eggs. Like those colourful ones in picture number three. It’s basically a religious holiday, which religious people spend in churches. There’re no games you can play.

I wouldn’t like to celebrate Christmas with my friends because for me it’s a family celebration. A time when you can get together with your relatives for dinner. Exchange gifts, chat. You decorate a Christmas tree to create the right atmosphere. No, Christmas is for your family, not your friends really.

1. How is Halloween celebrated in Poland?

I’ll tell you what I do on Halloween. I usually meet with my friends in the evening. And together we bake some sweets, watch scary movies. Sometimes even dress up. And we also play board games. When I was little we used to go trick or treating in my neighbourhood.

2. What are Polish celebrations or holidays apart from Easter and Christmas? What happens then?

Some people celebrate Independence Day on 11th November. And some celebrations are strictly connected with the Catholic church. And there’re some celebrations in the summer, which originated from pagan Slavic traditions. On Independence Day, you have parades, concerts. You can see national flags all over. Sometimes, you can even meet vets, who really fought in the war, but there’re very few of them left.

3. How do you normally celebrate Christmas? Have you ever celebrated Christmas abroad? If not, would you like to?

No, I have never celebrated Christmas abroad. But at least once in my life during Christmas time I’d like to go somewhere warm. Maybe Florida or Egypt. Just to experience this celebration differently.

4. What parades are organized in Poland and why?

There are some. But they all usually take place on Independence Day, or when there’s another public holiday. Unfortunately, we don’t have parades in carnivals, such as those in South America. However, we have Parada Równości in June. People dress up in colourful clothes and manifest equality of all.

A: The CEO in my company is planning to hire a new sales department manager. This week I spent a few hours discussing it with him. Now I know what we expect from a candidate. First of all, when it comes to personal qualities, we need a person who is confident, has leadership skills, is honest and hard-working. And of course, she or he needs to be good at working with other people.

B: What about the candidate’s professional skills?

A: Well, at least five years of experience doing the same or very similar job for a company similar to ours. The candidate must know how to use professional databases, Microsoft Office programmes. He or she needs to speak good English. I mean not just communicate, but speak English fluently. That includes professional vocabulary used in sales. Driving license is a must too.

B: What about working hours? Flexitime?

A: Punctuality of course comes first, but a manager must be available to the CEO. Almost every month, there’s some kind of a business trip. Sometimes even international one. They usually take two or three days. That’s why the candidate needs to be flexible and cannot have and other, more important and permanent obligations.

B: And does your company have a list of workplace values?

A: Of course. We have values such focusing on detail, being honest, keeping promises and deadlines, being reliable and positive. But also making a difference. And the candidate must share them, too.

In the picture, I can see a man with two kids. They’re probably in the kitchen. I can see a washing machine and a sink, but also a fridge and a few cupboards. The older child who is 6 or 7 years old is sweeping the floor. The younger one is sitting on the floor and putting dirty laundry into the washing machine. And dad is helping him or her, I can see only the kid’s back. It could be Saturday because on that day people usually do most chores. They’re just busy doing the washing. Mum may be in the other room, doing the ironing or vacuuming. Or just resting, because the children with the help of their dad will do all the chores.

1. Which chores do you usually do at home? How do you go about them?

Once a week, usually on Saturday, I sweep, vacuum and wash the floors. Once or twice a week, I dust all the furniture. On Fridays I clean the bathroom. Every two or three months, I clean the windows. And in the summer, I mow our lawn and take care of all the plants and trees we have in the garden. I try to do them regularly. Then it is not so hard.

2. Would you like to have a housekeeper to do chores in the future?

If I had enough money, I’d definitely hire someone to do most chores for me. That’s because I really don’t like cleaning and suchlike. It’s a waste of time for me. I certainly like my house to be clean, but I have other and better things to do during those five or six hours a week which I normally spend cleaning the house.

3. How old were you when you started doing chores? What did you do? How did you feel about it?

I think I was probably five or six years old when I started helping my parents with household chores. I started with dusting furniture in my room and vacuuming my carpet. And I also helped my mum in the garden. I didn’t like it. I understand, though, it’s something you have to do.

[przykładowa wypowiedź, przykładowe pytania egzaminatora]

In nine out of ten cases I pay by card. That’s how I buy tickets on the bus or tram, buy clothes or shoes when I go shopping. And when I go out with my friends and we eat in a restaurant or go to the cinema, I also pay by card. In my opinion, it’s the fastest and most convenient payment method. All you need is your card. And when you spend less than 100 PLN you don’t even need to enter your PIN for the transaction to be accepted. Plus, paying by card is free. At least in my bank. I’m talking about a debit card, of course. Because for credit cards or other types of cards, you probably need to pay. What’s more, a card is much smaller than a whole wallet with bank notes and coins in it.

Paying by cash is very inconvenient, in my opinion. Wallets are big, and they take up space in your bag. An important disadvantage is that you can run out of cash. And when you have a card, it doesn’t happen, at least for some time. On the other hand, some people say that you’re more careful with cash, so you spend less.

And I’m not interested in paying by phone because there are many viruses and malicious software that can hack your data and information from your bank’s app, such as password and personal details. And if you lose your phone, you can only call your bank and block the app.

1. What are the pros and cons of using a credit card? Do you have one? Would you like to have one?

I don’t have a credit card and I would never want one. First of all, you need to pay every month for using a card. Also, you can fall into a bad habit of constantly exceeding your financial abilities, and always being in debt, buying more than you can afford. So, yes, I’m not a fan of credit cards.

2. Which payment method seems to be most convenient for you when it comes to foreign currency?

I think I’d choose cash because for international transfers of money (if you were to pay in foreign currency while shopping online) or for paying abroad by card issued in Poland, banks usually charge you extra. There’s a fee and sometimes also four or five percent extra counted from the amount of money you actually spend. Well, sometimes, you need to transfer money.

3. Which payment method is the safest? Which is the cheapest/ the most expensive? Why?

Credit cards and debit cards are easily the most secure and safe payment method to use when you shop online. Cards use online security features like encryption and fraud monitoring to keep your accounts and personal information safe. Also, if you card gets stolen, you can block it. If they steal money from you, not much can be done.

4. Would you consider taking a loan in the future? Why? Why not?

Yes. For example, if had to pay for my medical expenses. Or for treatment of one of my close family members. Or if I didn’t have enough money to buy a place to live. But I’d never really take a loan to buy fancy car or expensive clothes. It’s not worth it. At least this is the way I see it now.

B: Mountains, July? It’s very hot then so hiking in the mountains would be tiring. Actually, in July, I’m visiting my grandparents.

A: Oh, okay. So what about the last week of August? The temperatures probably won’t be so high. Not too sunny, but not too cloudy or rainy either.

B: End of August sounds much better.

A: And where would you like to go? I was thinking about Karpacz. There’re many mountain trails which begin there. For example, we could climb Śnieżka from two different sides.

B: Karpacz? Isn’t it too pricey?

A: Not really. It’s not more expensive than other towns in that area. I’ve compared the prices.

B: And what about accommodation? Where’re we going to stay?

A: Last week, I found one two-star and two three-star hotels, which also offer meals. And they all have swimming pools and a spa & wellness zone. And they’re not expensive: 170 PLN for one night per person, plus 70 PLN for breakfast and dinner. I think it’s a very reasonable price.

B: Indeed, it is. Can you send me an e-mail with the details about those hotels so that I can check them out?

A: Sure. And one more thing. Each of us should pack two pairs of comfortable hiking boots, at least ten t-shirts, comfortable shorts and trousers. And some raincoats in case it rains.

[przykładowa wypowiedź, przykładowe pytania egzaminatora]

In the foreground, I can see two men arguing about something. And in the background, there are four other people. Two of them are sitting at the table, and the other two are standing by the window. They look confused and uncomfortable. They don’t like the situation they’re witnessing. They’re looking at two men that seem to be arguing. You can tell by their faces. The place looks like an office because there are white desks with computers on them. And on the screens of those computers I can see some data and graphs. What’s more, all people are dressed according to their company’s dress code – they all have shirts (most of them have white ones) and dark trousers. It’s hard to tell why the men are arguing. An important project? The man on the right is pointing at it.

1. What do you think is going to happen next?

Those two arguing men look like they have higher positions in the company, and all the ‘spectators’ are their subordinates. So I don’t think anyone will intervene. They’ll probably finish their dispute when they have nothing else to say or argue about. Also, some senior manager may come and calm them down, and try to help them resolve the conflict.

2. Do you intervene in other people’s arguments?

I have never taken part in a dispute of which I was not a party. For me, it doesn’t make any sense to intervene in an argument when you don’t have an idea what it is about. But I image I would intervene if someone started physical violence against another person. Well, I believe there’re people who have the skills and knowledge to help in such situations.

3. Tell us about a situation when you had to resolve a conflict, your own or somebody else’s.

Once at school I witnessed a friend of mine who wasn’t happy with the mark from a test and he was arguing with a teacher. I intervened and calmed him down. And I apologised for him. Arguments happen. It’s good to know how to handle them.

[przykładowa wypowiedź, przykładowe pytania egzaminatora]

If I were to choose between learning foreign languages, horse-riding and art classes, I’d say that the best extra classes for kids in the primary school would be learning foreign languages. Foreign languages are very important, especially then you start working. In a lot of jobs, you need to speak fluent English. A second or even third foreign language wouldn’t do any harm either. And the earlier you start earning them, the better results you’ll achieve. And it’ll take you less time to learn it. Plus, I think it’s also a great activity to develop your other skills like speaking and working in groups. They’re very useful in life.

I’d reject horse-riding because there isn’t any value for kids in it. You don’t really keep fit while doing it once or twice a week for 30 minutes. And the only thing you can gain is a concussion or other injury when a horse steps on your feet by accident. Or hits you. Or when you fall from it.

And I also think there’s no use in making children attend extra art classes. It’ll be boring for most of them. They’d rather go outside and play some games with their friends than sit in a classroom for one or two extra hours. Some kids like it, though, and then they should do it.

1. Did you have and extracurricular activities when you were in a primary school?

Yes, I did. I used to play volleyball in my school’s team. And I had extra music lessons. I played the piano. I really liked it. And from time to time, I also sang in a choir in my school. When I was nine or ten I also started having extra English, and later also French, lessons.

2. What foreign languages do you speak? Would you like to know any other?

I speak English. I think I’m at B1+ or B2 level at it. I also speak French. But it’s really basic. One day I’d like to learn Spanish. I love Spain. I’ve been there five times and I simply adore their culture. So I’d really like to start learning Spanish.

3. Do you think schools should organize extra classes for students like playing chess?

I think it’s great if school organizes extracurricular activities. That way parents don’t waste time on driving their kids first to school and later to other extra classes. More kids will attend such classes which are at their school. And school would earn some extra money.

4. What’s your opinion of school trips? Should they be organized or not? Why? Why not?

I think school trips which last three, four or even seven days are a really great experience for kids, and also teenagers. They can socialise, do some group activities like playing games or doing sports. This will help them be more open and sociable. Also, it’s great fun, at least for most of them.

A: So, let’s talk about the flat we want to rent in Edinburgh. Winter term starts in October, so I think it’d be good to rent a flat by the end of August. First location. In my opinion, it should be near an underground station. There’re a lot of traffic jams in the city, so counting only on buses and trams wouldn’t be sensible. Using subway, we’ll always be on time.

B: Correct. But I think having a bus or tram stop nearby is also important. Just in case.

A: Okay. And how big do you think the flat should be? Before we answer that question, I believe we must ask ourselves if we want any other roommates? I definitely don’t. I don’t want more people in the flat. You never know if they’re tidy, whether or not they pay the bills on time, or if they party a lot and bring some noisy friends over.

B: I agree. Just the two of us is enough. On the other hand, we’ll have to pay a lot of money. Do you think we’ll manage?

A: Let’s just look around and see how much money we’ll need monthly.

A: Alright, the size of the flat now. I think there should be two bedrooms. One for each of us. And a separate kitchen. And, of course, a bathroom and a decent hall. Approximately 45 – 55 m2.

B: Wouldn’t you like a third bedroom. Actually, a kind of living room where we can hang out with our friends.

A: Well, I surely would. A three-bedroom flat will be quite expensive. Don’t you think? I have £1000 to cover all my costs: rent, all additional expenses such as electricity, water, gas, internet. And having an additional room would add another £500 rent monthly, wouldn’t it?

B: Oh, yes. You’re right. That’ll probably be too expensive.

I can see a lot of people. Some of them are holding their hands up; someone is taking pictures with their smartphone. In could be a concert taking place at night. Possibly, an open-air concert. That’s because in the foreground there are a lot of people who are standing and waving their hands. And it looks like some of them are recording. Plus, there’s a lot of confetti in the air. And somewhere in the background there’re some square-shaped lights. And they resemble the lights that I’ve seen many times on the stage, behind the singers or other type of performers. But this place may as well be a very big club with people just having fun and a DJ in the background.

1. Have you ever been to a concert? If not, would you like to?

I have been to a concert a few times in my life. But those weren’t proper concerts. They were organized during school fairs or other festivals. There wasn’t a big stage, numerous lights or very loud music. And no crowds either. Nevertheless, I enjoyed those concerts.

2. Do you prefer going out with your friends or staying at home at weekends?

It depends. If I’m tired I prefer to stay at home, watch a movie, a TV series or read a book. But if I’m not, I really enjoy going out with my friends. We go to the restaurant, to the cinema. Sometimes even to the theatre or opera. And once a month we stay at home together and play some board games.

3. Tell me about the last concert, festival or other celebration you took part it.

The last festival I took part in was a summer festival last July. It was organised in my neighbourhood. At the last weekend of July. On Saturday, there was a small concert in the evening. There were some group activities for kids, screenings of some old movies. You could also buy a piece of cake, a coffee, or even have dinner.

If I were to travel for instance directly to Greece, alone, with my friends or family, and stay there in one place for a week or two, I’d definitely choose a plane. It’s very fast. It’d take between one and a half and two and a half hours to get there from Poland. It’s quite comfortable as well. When you fly, you don’t feel you are moving. It feels like you’re sitting in one place. And nowadays flights can be very cheap, too. If you book the tickets early enough, you can get a fairly cheap ticket. The only disadvantage of travelling by plane is the time you waste at the airport: checking-in, security control, and later waiting for boarding.

I wouldn’t like to travel by train because I think that these days there are no direct train connections between Poland and countries such as Greece, Italy or Spain. It’s not really comfortable to change trains. It could also be quite stressful because if one train is late, you can miss all the others. And you can get stuck in the middle of Serbia or Bulgaria.

I wouldn’t choose the car as a means of transport either. That’s because it’s very tiring to drive 30 hours by car to Greece. Even if there’s more than one person who has a driving license and is willing to take turns with you. Also, you need to find a place a park your car, always the same problem.

1. Have you ever travelled by plane? Did you enjoy that experience?/ If not, would you like to?

Yes, I have. A couple of times. The last time was last summer when I went to Italy with my parents. I really like flying. The best part of the experience, in my opinion, is the moment when the plane takes off. And you actually start flying. When the plane is in the air, it’s quite boring during those two or three hours. And landings sometimes can be quite tough.

2. Which means of transport is in your opinion eco-friendliest? Why?

Vehicles that use electricity seem to be eco-friendly: undergrounds, trams. In some cities there’re also electric buses. And some people also have hybrid or electric cars. Let’s be honest. The most eco-friendly vehicle is the bicycle. If more people used the bicycle, our environment would be a lot better-off.

3. Do you use public transport? Why? Why not? How can we encourage people to use public transport?

Yes, I use public transport. Mostly buses and trams. In my city there’s no underground. In the city centre, it’s much cheaper and faster to move around by bus or tram. Especially now, when the fuel is so expensive. Plus. it’s more ecological. Public transport should be cheap. Travel cards should be a lot cheaper. We should constantly remind people of the benefits of using public transportation. There should be a high-quality app with all possible information: bus stops, times of departures, routs etc, tickets.

4. How important is it to have a driving license nowadays? Should everyone have a driving licence? Why?

It depends where you live. If it’s a village with hardly any public transport and buses or trains which allow you to get to bigger cities, having a driving license is very important. But if you live in a big city, where there’s a lot of traffic jams, but well-organized public transport, it’s not necessary. It’s good to have a driving licence, for instance, for your job.

A: Good morning. I’d like to ask for a salary rise. For the last four years, I’ve been working as a junior brand manager. There’re quite a lot of projects I’ve run myself or supervised. I’ve got more responsibilities now and I work more effectively.

B: Can you name your most successful projects?

A: Well, last month I launched a campaign for our new product. It’s been very successful. Our sales have gone up by 13%. In February, I coordinated a campaign for a new line of our products, red line shoes. And a year ago, I was in charge of a very successful billboard campaign. Billboards with shoelaces of different colours and sizes helped us promote new models of shoes.

B: Sounds impressive.

A: Apart from those successful projects, I’ve been also improving my skills. This year I finished my post-graduate managerial studies. Also, I’ve learnt to communicate in German. I’ve also finished a few courses connected with brand management.

B: And what type of post-graduate studies did you do?

A: Law in brand management. Very useful for my job. What’s more, I’ve attended several academic conferences where I gave a few speeches on our most successful campaigns.

B: Well, I must say I’m impressed. What kind of rise are you thinking about?

A: PLN 1200.

B: You know I need to discuss it with other managers. I’ll let you know.

A: Okay.

In the picture, I can see a woman and a child. The woman is wearing a red T-shirt and white trousers. The kid is wearing a striped T-shirt and black trousers. He’s sitting in a trolley. I think that they’re in a supermarket. That’s because all those shelves and fridges with fruit and vegetables are quite large and long. Both the mum and the child are reaching for lemons or oranges or for some yellow fruit. In the background, I can see two big fridges, where shop assistants usually put fizzy drinks in cans and bottles. And sometimes also alcohol. In front of one of the fridges there’s a freezer with some frozen fish, meat or other products. In the shopping trolley there’s a lot of fruit. And some vegetables. So I would say that the family eats healthy.

1. Do you have any loyalty cards supermarkets or other businesses? Why? Why not? How can you can benefit from them?

I have a few such cards. For instance, in Biedronka and Auchan. And I must say I actually benefit from them. In Biedronka there’re often bargains and special offers for different products. Only for club members. So, for example, I can buy two products for the price of one, sometimes, even three.

2. What are the advantages and/ or disadvantages of supermarkets in comparison with local grocery shops?

Supermarkets are larger and there’s a wider variety of products available. And in most cases their prices are lower than at a local grocery shop. Supermarkets also have longer opening hours, which is extremely important if you work till late afternoon. They’re often open at the weekends. On the other hand, doing the shopping at a small shop takes a lot less time. You normally don’t have to queue. You can also chat with the shop owner.

3. When was the last time you went shopping? Where did you go? What did you buy?

Last Saturday, I went shopping with my mum. First, we went grocery shopping. We bought some food for dinner on Saturday and Sunday. Next, we went to the shopping mall, because I needed a new pair of jeans and a few T-shirts. I managed to buy them all in one shop, so after three hours we were back.

[przykładowa wypowiedź, przykładowe pytania egzaminatora]

If I were to advertise a new product made by my company, I’d definitely choose to buy advertising space on a web page, or rather websites. In my opinion, the Internet is the best way to promote a product or service. That’s because most people spend a few hours a day browsing websites, checking latest news, reading some articles, watching videos on YouTube. And on all of those websites or apps you can put your advertisements, for example, pop-up windows. Of course, the adds must catch your eye; they must be colourful.

I wouldn’t advertise a product in a newspaper because not many people read them. I think that 50 or 60% of readers only look at specific pages, for example, sport, local news. And they won’t even look at the advertisement pages.

I wouldn’t choose TV commercial, either. That’s because nowadays fewer and fewer people watch TV. Commercial breaks are very long, and people don’t sit in front of the TV. They go to the kitchen to grab something to eat, they check websites or social media. So maybe 10 or 15% of people who watch a movie will watch the commercial.

1. What sources of information are most reliable nowadays? Why?

I think that these days the most reliable source of information is the Internet. You can browse any website you want. There’re different online newspapers. Also, foreign newspapers. So given events are described from different points of view. But at the same time, it can be a very unreliable source of information if you don’t know which websites you can trust. You also need to verify information.

2. Do people still listen to news on the radio? Why? Why not? Is there any point in it?

In my opinion, some people, usually elderly people, still listen to news on the radio. Also, people who are driving a car listen to it. I myself do it. I think news on the radio still make sense. News on the radio are always at the same time, they last five or six minutes, so you get the most important information.

3. Do you think that TV commercials still encourage people to buy some products? Why? Why not?

I think that there’re still many people who sit in front of TV in the evening and watch movies of TV series. So they also watch commercials during commercial breaks. And if a commercial is interesting enough and draws their attention, there’s a chance that it will make people buy some products. We can still see that rich companies produce and show TV commercials, so it probably makes sense for them.

4. How can we ensure that the information available in the media is reliable?

We have free speech nowadays, so it’s not easy to control the media, and maybe we shouldn’t do that at all. We can only educate people to verify information online and appreciate good journalists. We could also punish people who spread lies or rumours, and tell people that this is reliable information. It’s also hard to catch them.

A: When it comes to that competition ‘What do you know about English-speaking countries?’, we’re organising, I was thinking that we could organise it at the end of April, just after the Easter break. Let’s say Monday 28th. That way everyone who wants to participate will have enough time to prepare, plus those six days of the Easter break.

B: Sure. That’s a great idea. And what will the competition look like? What kind of questions shall we ask?

A: I think that we can prepare between 30 and 40 multiple choice questions, each with four options. It can’t be too easy, though, so at least some of the questions must be hard. I’d also add one open question. A short composition.

B: I don’t think it’s a good idea. We have only 45 minutes to hold the competition. With a composition, it would have to be at least one hour.

A: You’re right. So let’s stick to multiple choice questions. What do we expect the participants to know, actually? I have a book on English-speaking countries in pdf. It’s in English. And it has approximately 100 pages. I think we could attach it to the rules and regulations when we send the information about the competition.

B: Okay. Sure. And what about the awards?

A: I talked to a few teachers and three best students can get good marks in English. We also have some money to buy one book for each of those three persons.

B: Books? What are you talking about? Students don’t want any more book. We need to think of something more attractive. What about a trip to London or New York?

A: Are you serious? Who’s going to pay for that?

B: Let’s look for sponsors.

A: OK.

In the picture, I can see a stadium full of people. It looks like a football stadium. Around the football pitch, there’s also a running track. On the track, there’re people in orange and green vests. They look like maintenance man. The football field is empty, so there’s probably a break now. It’s an open-air stadium and all spectators are wearing warm clothes. Coats, jackets, trousers, hats. So it’s probably cold outside. Late autumn or winter. There’s also one person in the foreground who is taking pictures. He may be a journalist or someone hired by the organisers of the event. To take photos which will be later put on their website or social media profiles.

1. Why do you think people watch sports?

In my opinion, people like watching sports such as football, basketball or volleyball because they find it exciting. They can witness a competition. Cheer on their team. But that’s also an opportunity to meet with friends. People also experience a sense of community; they’re together.

2. How important are PE lessons at school?

I didn’t like doing sports on PE lessons because nine times out of ten we play team sports such as basketball or volleyball and I don’t really like them. I prefer athletics. Running, for example. In general, physical education is very important. Without PE lessons, some students wouldn’t do any sports.

3. Tell me about the last time you watched a live sporting event or a sporting event on TV.

I think the last time I went to a sporting event was last summer. I got free tickets from a friend of mine who got sick and couldn’t go. So I took my brother and my sister, and together we went to see horse-racing competition. I must admit that it was really interesting. It was the first time I had seen such a competition. I’m a great fan of horse racing now.

In my opinion, the most interesting way of spending your holiday is sightseeing. You can visit some cities in which there’re ancient ruins, beautiful buildings from previous centuries. You can appreciate the beauty of architecture, but also visit museum in which you get to know more about important and interesting people from the past, or historical events. That way you can broaden your horizon and your knowledge. And I think it’s really exciting. While walking around the town, you’ll also see how people in different regions in your country or in other countries live.

I don’t think that there’s anything interesting in spending your holiday on a sunbed next to the hotel swimming pool. Surrounded by dozens of noisy people and children running around. There’s no fun in it. You can’t learn anything interesting. It’s a very passive way of spending your holiday.

And I wouldn’t recommend ziplining or other form of extreme holiday, either. That’s because only a few percent of people will find it interesting. And for most people it’ll be too dangerous. And when you go on holiday, I think that the main purpose is always to relax. And that certainly isn’t a way to do it.

1. Have you ever tried ziplining? How did you like it? If you haven’t, would you like to try?

Yes, I have. I tried it for the first time in 5th grade in primary school. We were on a school trip. And we went ziplining over a lake. I was really excited and I liked that experience. It’s just fun. I don’t think it’s really dangerous.

2. Do you prefer the mountains or the seaside? Why?

I prefer seaside. That’s because I like sunbathing and swimming in the sea. Also, I think that if you’re tired, the best way to relax is just to lie on the beach. Some people find hiking relaxing, but seaside works best for me.

3. Why do you think so many people like winter sports such as skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing?

I think it's because of the thrill of sliding on snow down the slope. Down the mountain. The higher, the better. Because it adds excitement and a sense of success and achievement. Besides, it involves staying in the open air; it’s usually fresh air in the mountains, with beautiful landscapes.

4. How do you usually spend your holidays?

I prefer to go on holiday alone. That’s because you can stay whenever you want, go whenever you want. Choose the places you want to visit. The restaurants you want to eat in. You don’t depend on other people, so wherever I go, I usually go alone. I like spending my holidays on the beach. I just go swimming and read a lot of books. I find it relaxing. Sightseeing can also be quite interesting, but not too many things on one day.

I just watch TV and eat at Christmas. Easter is my favourite festival. Last Easter the whole family went for a walk, then we had a special meal followed by lots of Easter eggs, I like it because it is nice to see all the family and because of all the chocolate eggs, we are all chocoholics.

Shaziya

I don’t celebrate Christmas at all, because it’s not in my religion, but of course in Britain everyone celebrates, so my family goes to Rose’s house and we just have a family dinner. Last Christmas we went to Coventry to my aunt’s house and had a big meal together. My favourite festival’s EiD. It s the day after Ramadan the Muslim faith, then we have fun, a lot of nice food and we pray.

Ben

I’m Jewish so we don’t celebrate Christmas, but it’s a good excuse to get together anyway. My favourite festival is Passover, which is very important in the Jewish faith and last full week. On the first two nights we have a big family meal and you read from the Bible. Then we give and get presents. That is fantastic!

Jennifer

My favourite holiday is Christmas. I’m not really religious, but it is an important time for me, because all the family are together. We have a large Christmas lunch with turkey and cranberry sauce, stuffing and Christmas pudding and we also give and receive presents.

First of all, while caravanning, you’ll reconnect with nature, and you’ll calm down and recharge your batteries as a result. You’ll take a break from your usual busy days. If you go as a family, you’ll have many opportunities to speak to your loved ones and spend quality time with them, for instance, around a bonfire. Also, if you have a dog or a cat, they’ll be happy as well, being outdoors all the time, practically. One of the best things about being outdoors is physical exercise you can get. You can go for a hike, swimming, or playing games. Remember, there's no need to pitch a tent or worry about the rain. Also, you have your own bathroom, and there’s some sort of heating in most campers.

Every year hundreds of millions of tons of plastic are produced to make objects that people use on a daily basis. As a result, every day millions of tons of these plastics are disposed of as waste. This plastic causes severe environmental damage as it breaks down very slowly and produces toxic by-products in the process. It turns out there’s potentially a very good way to recycle plastics. Some bacteria can break down plastics. Sounds incredible, but it’s true. Actually, it can be grown very easily and help drastically reduce plastic pollution across the world. In 2016 a team of researchers in Japan discovered bacteria that could digest plastics much faster than previously identified bacteria. Let’s hope we grow enough plastic-eating bacteria before we drown in plastic.

By going to Mars and exploring it, human knowledge would increase greatly. Understanding whether life existed elsewhere in the Universe beyond Earth is a fundamental question. Mars can also help us to learn more about our home. In fact, evidence suggests that Mars was once full of water, warmer and had a thicker atmosphere. There’s the possibility that the settlement of other planets could decrease the likelihood of human extinction. We also have economic interest in its resources, and exploring the planet may be a good investment opportunity. People have a desire to go there and colonize it because humanity needs challenges to move forward.

Speaker 3

Drones have multiple uses. They can be used by the military to spy or even to perform airstrikes. This is a very controversial use, but the truth is the technology has been developed by the military. Droned are used to take aerial photos. It’s cheap to get a bird’s eye view of your favourite city or beach. Some specialized drones are used for search and rescue operations. They can often get to some remote places in a relatively short time, and not only find people but also bring them food or medicines. Drone are used in weather forecasting, especially in tracking and forecasting tornadoes.

Speaker 4

If you choose to carry a cell phone, you submit yourself to constant surveillance and scrutiny. You can never truly escape the people around you because they are always just a phone call away. Some people even say that your cell phone is a lot like a leash. They can track you down anywhere. Today parents give their children cell phones so that they can check up on them. Most companies do the same thing. In this way they can keep track of their employees at all times. People become more and more dependent on their phones; they use them for banking and finding a way, for communicating with other and for tuning musical instruments, and many, many others.

We’re talking about serious games here. Games that combine teaching the playful energy of video games, games that really stimulate learning. Such games can help educate people. Of course, there are certain conditions. You must not force people to play games to learn. Also, it must be a real game, that is the outcome cannot be know in advance, and it must have a clear end. Serious Games have an overall positive impact on student motivation.

If you move a lot and you know you won’t be in a place for a very long time, you wonder if it makes sense to emotionally invest in relationships and friendships, and I think sometimes relationship become more superficial because building them takes time and commitment, and you know you’ll leave again and who needs a broken heart. I’ve lived in nine different countries, and although I have, of course, great memories and part of my heart is in all of them, I feel I belong nowhere and certainly not in my home country anymore, either.

It is the most popular tourist attraction in Xi’an [ksi an] and one of the most popular in all of China. The 8,000 lifelike terracotta warriors and 130 or so chariots have silently stood guard over the soul of China’s first unifier for more than two millennia. Although the weapons were stolen and the coloring has faded greatly, their existence and the fact that no two faces are alike serves as a testament to the amount of labor and skill involved in their construction. It still gives me shivers.

Our radio reporters spoke to a few young people on the streets of London to find out, what they think about the dangers of genetically modified food. Here are some of their opinions.

Chantelle

I’m against genetically modified food. I definitely avoid it, even if it does keep longer. It can’t be good for you, it hasn’t been tested, so nobody knows what the long-term effects will be. I would like to buy more organic foods, but it’s far too expensive, so for now I wouldn’t buy it.

Robert

My mom cooks most of the time, so I can’t really control, what I eat. Battery farming of chickens and other animals concerns me more. I don’t want to eat food or use stuff, that is being tested on animals. They can’t choose whether or not they are all guinea pigs. I try to shop Health Food Shops, when I can.

Carla

I think a lot of food that you buy on the streets, like hot dogs and burgers, is as dangerous as genetically modified food. I think it’s a really good development for our world, as it could really help the developing countries by providing them with cheaper and more nutritious food to help them survive.

Mark

I used to eat home-grown food from our farm, when I was a kid, you know. I didn’t know or think about what pollution could be in the food. Now I live in where I work, so I don’t know what’s in the food I eat. It still doesn’t make any difference to me.

Troy

I wouldn’t have a problem with eating genetically modified food. It sounds perfectly okay to me. I imagine that must be a really good thing for all of us. Better, cheaper food. Seeing it on a label wouldn’t stop me from buying it. I guess if it’s sold in supermarkets, it can’t be a great risk. I’m sure it’s okay.

Neil

Genetically modified food must be developed safely and should be tested before it’s put on the market. We should be aware of what we eat. Personally I just eat the cheapest food. I expect cheap supermarket own-brand foods are full of genetically engineered ingredients, but that doesn’t stop me.

Our radio reporter asked the few young people on the streets of London to tell us about their experiences of learning a foreign language. Here are some of their opinions.

Steffan

I’ve been studying English in London for 5 months now. I learned English at school in Brazil, so I know grammar very well. Personally I don’t like reading much, but I found that watching the news is useful, as the news reader speaks slowly and clearly. Listening to music is a good way to learn. In my opinion it is best to learn a language when you are a child.

Pia

I started learning English in Sweden when I was 8 years old. At school it was quite formal but the teachers also made it fun, which I think is important. We watched films without the subtitles, read English magazines and listen to English music. Now I’m trying to learn Latin which is a very different experience, much more difficult and definitely not as much fun.

Rosanna

I learned a bit of basic English at school in Brazil, which gave me confidence. I want to be an air hostess, so I need to be able to speak English. I studied English at college, but my present job is the best way to practice, as I can speak to everybody. I also love watching TV and reading English magazines.

Bob

I left my job today, so I’m thinking of moving to Spain. I’ll need to brush up on my Spanish, for one to get a job. I’ve got a few Spanish friends, and so I picked up a bit of Spanish, but I’ve mostly learn the swear words – one of the disadvantages of learning from friends.

Simon

French was obligatory at my school and I quite enjoyed learning it. I spent a few months in France and I would love to go back, so I’m thinking of taking night classes and use in tips. I don’t need another language in my profession, but I feel bad if I’m in a country and I can’t speak the language. So many visitors in London have such a good standard of English.

Michelle

I learnt German and Japanese at school, they were the only options. It was quite useful as I like to work in Germany for a tour ccompany, although speaking German wasn’t a requirement of the job, it made it easier though. I think once you know the basics of language, it is best to spend some time in the country like I did it, helped me a lot.

1. C   Zgodnie z tym, co jest napisane w tekście, w ciągu ostatnich 100 lat populacja tygrysów dramatycznie się zmniejszyła: …in the last 100 years the number of tigers in the world has decreased dramatically. Odpowiedź C jest parafrazą tego fragmentu.

2. A   Jedną z dwóch bezpośrednich przyczyn zmniejszania się populacji tygrysów jest kłusownictwo (poaching), czyli nielegalne polowanie (illegal hunting). Illegal hunting jest parafrazą poaching.

3. B   Rosnąca liczba ludzi prowadzi (pośrednio) do tego, że tygrysy tracą swoje naturalne środowisko życia (they are losing their natural habitat). Parafrazując, można powiedzieć, że ich naturalne środowisko jest niszczone (Their natural environment is being destroyed).

4. B   Odpowiedź B jest nieco okrojoną parafrazą zdania They have organised quite a few campaigns to stop poaching, and they are working with governments to build conservation areas so that tigers continue to have a home.

Warto zwrócić uwagę na różnicę między wyrażeniem campaign against (prowadzić kampanię przeciwko czemuś/ komuś) a campaign for (prowadzić kampanię na rzecz czegoś/kogoś).

3. B   Overcome their problem oznacza „przezwyciężą problem”, czyli wyleczą się z anoreksji – statystycznie tylko 60% anorektyków ma na to szansę (60% of anorexics can recover completely)

4. D   W grupie ryzyka może się znaleźć właściwie każdy, ale celebryci są szczególnie narażeni na zachorowanie, ponieważ ich wygląd jest stale oceniany prze fanów (Celebrities are particularly vulnerable because their fans are always judging their appearance.)

5. D   Przyczyny zaburzeń odżywiania są różne. W tekście wymienia się ich kilka. Dlatego odpowiedź There is a number of potential sources of such problems jest prawidłowa.

6. D   Taking systemic action oznacza „podjęcie działań systemowych” czyli na poziomie organizacji życia społecznego, systemu edukacji, który powinien kształcić i zachęcać młodych ludzi do racjonalnego odżywiania się i umiarkowanego wysiłku fizycznego. Odpowiedź D jest najpełniejsza, ponieważ mówi o roli systemu (szkoły) w kształtowaniu właściwych nawyków wśród młodzieży, o czym jest mowa w tekście (ostatni akapit) przede wszystkim. Pozostałe odpowiedzi odnoszą się do treści pytania jedynie częściowo.

Dear Lars,

I hope you’re good.

I’m on a language course in London, staying with a host family in Kensington. The area is quite posh but safe! The house is rather small, yet nice and cosy. I have my own bedroom!

I must tell you about that new Swiss girl, Chloe, from the course. She’s tall, slim, dark-haired, with the most beautiful almond eyes! She’s a dancer and she’s absolutely hilarious!

I spent my first day in London with Chloe. We went for a long walk around town, saw some famous spots, had lunch in Camden and a nap in Hyde Park I’d never had such a day before!

The course itself is great. I personally believe that such courses are perfect – you see new places, meet people and communicate in a foreign language every day.

Need to be going now. Hope to see you soon.

Write a few words.

If you want to achieve such good results, you must do what I did. How about coming to me and I will teach you how to prepare some healthy delicious dishes? I will give you some useful recipes too.

That’s all for now.

Jobs of the future

I’d like to talk about professions that are going to be in high demand in five and ten years. A lot of professions are getting automated. Automobile companies are testing driverless taxis, and driverless cars and trucks, so this kind of jobs will soon be getting automated. It means for us as human beings that in the future we're going to lose a lot of those low-level jobs.

Certainly, the market that is going to survive and thrive is medicine. It has been growing really fast. There will be a lot more jobs and this doesn’t only applies to doctors; it also applies to people taking care of people who sit at home and need home care. We’ve started to live longer, mainly thanks to advances in medicine, and the society is getting older.

Interestingly, another thriving market is AI in medicine, and yes, a lot of doctors’ offices are getting automated. For instance, there's this machine called DaVinci machine and you can perform a surgery without even being there. You can have a doctor here in the United States and that machine somewhere in Africa and the doctor from here will perform a surgery. The surgeon has a crystal-clear view of the surgical area that is magnified 10 times to what the human eye sees. The surgeon uses tiny instruments that move like a human hand but with a far greater range of motion and precision. IT in medicine is a huge market.

What’s more, all of the creative professions are going to thrive. It’s true we have AI, but it's not that developed yet. It cannot create awesome photographs; it cannot create awesome videos; it cannot write exciting stories for you. It can do some kind of stuff, but it is not yet on a sufficient level. AI is also unlikely to ever replace architects. They do a lot of creative analytical thinking that can't be replicated by technology. Additionally, they collaborate with other workers in the design and construction industry. There's a big future for creative professions.

Education is also growing, meaning that people are learning languages; people are learning different skills. Machines can’t really replace the human touch that is necessary in our schools that can only be delivered by high-quality educators. I think this traditional education when we just go to classes and follow the curriculum that is already set by somebody else is fading away. Think of Finland. They have this new school concept where kids don't just go to classes teachers tell them to attend. They select what they want to do. If they want to sing, they can sing the whole day; if they want to construct something; then the school provide resources for that. Finland is one of the top countries for education in the world right now. I think this is going to be a trend in the future.

Purpose in life

INTERVIEWER: Simon, so how to find purpose in life?

SIMON: I think one of the mistakes that people make is they think purpose comes from their job. They think, ‘I’ve worked here so long, and now I retire or I lose my job, and I don’t have a sense of purpose anymore.’ They confuse themselves with their job. All of a sudden, they wake up in the morning, and don’t know what to do.

INTERVIEWER: Isn’t that what we’ve been taught? That your job should be your passion.

SIMON: Passion – yes. Purpose – not. Your purpose is not the job that you wake up to do every day. Your purpose is something bigger.

INTERVIEWER: So how do you find this something bigger? What is it really?

SIMON: Well, it can be different for each of us. I have a few little rules that you can follow to find a bigger purpose. One is go after the things that you want. Can I tell you a story?

INTERVIEWER: Sure. Go ahead.

SIMON: A friend of mine and I went for a run in Central Park. There’s this Road Runners Organization. At weekends, they host races. It's very common that they have a sponsor who will give something away, like apples or bagels after the race.

INTERVIEWER: Oh, I’ve seen that. Hundreds of people take part in the races.

SIMON: Yeah, lots of people. On this particular day, when we got to the end of the run, there were some free bagels, and they had picnic tables set up. On one side was a group of volunteers on the table were boxes of bagels, and on the other side was a long line of runners waiting to get their free bagel. I said to my friend, ‘Let's get a bagel’ and he looked at me and said, ‘Ah, the line's too long.’ And I said, ‘Free bagel’ and he said, ‘I don't want to wait in line’. And I was like, ‘Free bagel’, and he said, ‘No, it's too long’. That's when I realized that there are two ways to see the world: Some people see the thing that they want and some people see the thing that prevents them from getting what they want.

INTERVIEWER: Simon, isn’t that too simple?

SIMON: No, it’s not. Actually, essential things are simple. Look, I could only see the bagels. He could only see the line. The rule is you can go after whatever you want; you just cannot deny anyone else to go after whatever they want. You don't have to do it the way everybody else has done it. You can do it your way. We’re different and we need to accept that.

INTERVIEWER: I can see you like stories. Give me another story, like in the Bible.

SIMON: Alright, here's another story. In the 18th century, there was a kind of fever known as the black death of childbed spreading across Europe.

INTERVIEWER: Never heard of it. What was it?

SIMON: Basically, women who gave birth to a child would die within 48 hours after giving birth. It was getting worse and worse. Doctors and men of science wanted to find the reason for this. They would study the corpses of the women who had died and, in the morning, they would conduct autopsies, and then in the afternoon they would go and deliver babies.

INTERVIEWER: I think I know what you’re driving at.

SIMON: It wasn't until somewhere in the mid-1800s that Oliver Wendell Holmes realized that all of these doctors conducting autopsies in the morning weren't washing their hands before they delivered babies in the afternoon, and he pointed it out. He said doctors themselves were the problem.

INTERVIEWER: What happened next?

SIMON: They ignored Holmes and called him crazy for 30 years until finally somebody realized that if they simply washed their hands, it would go away, and that's exactly what happened when they started sterilizing their instruments and washing their hands. The black death of childbed disappeared. The lesson here is sometimes you’re the problem. Take accountability for your actions. You can take all the credit in the world for the things that you do right as long as you also take responsibility for the things you do wrong. It works like magic, really.

INTERVIEWER: Simon, thanks for the stories and the teaching.

Speaker 1

I think the biggest problem in the world today is actually unity. I’d say there's a connection problem. Meaning that everywhere you go people are kind of tuned into their phone. They connect, yet there’s no real connection. I think people need to put their trust in humanity instead of systems that divide us. I think that one of the things we have to do is just kind to show empathy for all of our fellow brothers and sisters, not only here, in our country, but everywhere. You know, and from there, if there's a dialogue, we can start to kind of tackle problematic issues and hopefully make the world a better place.

Speaker 2

Climate change appears to be the crucial issue of our time. Food productions is threatened by changing weather patterns and rising sea levels bring the risk of catastrophic flooding. Climate change has an enormous global impact that is unmatched in scale. It was reported after the fifth intergovernmental panel on climate change that in the years 1880–2012, the average global temperature increased by 0.85 degrees Celsius. The global temperature keeps rising, and it is predicted to go up from 2.6 to 4.8 by 2100. Oceans are warmer, there is less snow and ice, and the sea level is higher. Finally, we are going to have no ice in the arctic and terrible heatwaves will have a far-reaching effect on our daily life. It is written in Time magazine that ‘the real danger is when politicians and CEOs are making it look like the real action is happening when in fact almost nothing is being done’.

Speaker 3

Pollution is certainly a very serious issue. It can take many forms. It’s in the air we breathe, the water we drink, the soil we use to grow our food. Even the increasing noise we hear every day can all contribute to health problems and considerably lower our quality of life. Environmental pollution is causing irreparable damage to the natural world with major disruptions in ecosystems. Literally, lots of people are dying because of air and soil pollution. The risk of lung cancer and respiratory diseases is greatly increased. Apparently, air pollution is the most devastating pollution type causing worldwide mortality. Pollution is one of the hardest global issues to address because it is very broadly defined.

Speaker 4

Many children across the world do not have some of their most basic educational needs met. How can they later solve big problems if they can’t really learn how the world functions? 15 years ago, the international community resolved that all children should have primary school education. Even though impressive headway has been made, there are still more that 72 million school-age children all over the globe that cannot go to school.

The problem is not limited to children not going to school, and even when children are attending school the quality of their education might be poor or educational capacity and resources may be limited. In 2017, it was estimated that 600 million children were not mastering basic mathematics and literacy while at school.

Fixing education

INTERVIEWER: A lot of people feel that our system of education is not working properly. What’s wrong with it actually?

GUEST: You see the so-called real world is changing rapidly, and we send our kids to school to prepare them to be able to cope with the challenges of daily life. The world is changing but our schools are not. The system of education we have now came into being in the Industrial Age to educate workers for factories, as many as possible. The idea of industrial mass production is still omnipresent in schools.

INTERVIEWER: What’s wrong with that?

GUEST: Let me explain. Lives of schoolchildren are governed by ringing bells. Following instructions is what students actually do at school. They’re given instructions like sit down, be quiet, open your books, turn to page 65, solve problem number four etc. If school children succeed in doing what they’re told, they are rewarded with good marks. Following instructions was particularly important for factory workers in the Industrial Age. Today, you won’t get very far but just following instructions. Nowadays, you need to learn to collaborate with others, to communicate your ideas, you need to be creative. Do our children really develop such skills at school?

INTERVIEWER: What exactly needs to be changed and how?

GUEST: Our children have no autonomy at school; they’re totally dependent on what teachers tell them to do. They’re fully controlled by the system, every minute. On the other hand, nowadays you need to learn to manage your time by yourself if you are to complete important work. Our children get a disturbing message that they’re not in charge of their lives. It is believed that independence and self-determination is very important for children. We desperately need to give children more autonomy; they need to regain the power to make their own decisions whatever it takes. Otherwise, no real problems will be solved.

GUEST: Well, learning doesn’t just involve memorisation and retention. There’s much more to learning and the changes that people undergo while gaining knowledge and skills.

INTERVIEWER: Well, alright. We shouldn’t be surprised that our children lack motivation and are rather fatigued at school. But what about discipline? How can we let every child make their own decisions?

GUEST: Of course, discipline is important, but we need to compromise and find ways to look after schoolchildren without excessively controlling their lives. There need to have more better skilled teachers. Groups of children need to be smaller. The curriculum needs to be more flexible. If we don’t make the necessary investments soon enough, it might be too late for the global community. Our quality of life will certainly drop.

INTERVIEWER: Is this all? I mean we just let children choose what they want to do at school and soon problems will be solved.

GUEST: Of course, not. That’s a necessary step, but there’s more to it. You see what happens at school today is not real learning. Children are expected to memorise and memorise loads of things. The knowledge that our children are supposed to gain is strictly defined. Then come tests and examinations to measure the retention of this knowledge. Most of the knowledge acquired in the system is forgotten the day after the test. We know that.

INTERVIEWER: Is there any other way?

GUEST: Of course, learning is not just memorising and recreating what we remember. This is what we measure and we care mostly about the test results. This cycle is notorious for its being inauthentic. We’re trapped in it. Students’ passions and interests are mostly neglected at school. Our school system requires the same pace of learning from all students, and also all students practically learn the same things. The truth is students are very different; each child is unique and can develop in a different way. And, ironically, that’s all we have; that’s the real value. We need to redefine testing. Educators need to become a lot more flexible.

INTERVIEWER: I think it is easier said than done. How should we go about the changes? How do we reform the system?

GUEST: Well, we can’t afford another reform. What we need are drastic and expensive changes before the system collapses entirely and becomes totally inadequate to deal with our current problems. Each of us has different passions and interests, and we shall feel self-realized if we find and develop our passions, which is often not easy. Do schools support children in finding and developing their passions? There are certain questions that every child needs to find answers to, for instance, How do I fit into this world and society? What am I really good at? What do I want to be good at? How do I want to make a living in the future? Does the system really care? Children are left alone to find answers to such basic questions.

INTERVIEWER: Thank you for all the explanations.

Let them eat all plastic

INTERVIEWER: Why is plastic actually such a big problem?

GUEST: There's a worldwide plastic production of 350 million tons a year. And about 300 million tons end up as waste. We've put billions of tons of plastic into the environment. By 2050, people have predicted that there'll be more plastic in the ocean than fish in terms of weight.

INTERVIEWER: But is it really a danger to our lives or ecosystems.

GUEST: It needs to be emphasised that wildlife is killed by plastics pollutions, literally killed. A large number of seabirds, turtles and other sea mammals accidentally swallow plastic and die. Also, a lot of animals get entangled in it, and die as well. It’s also dangerous for human beings. Microplastics have been found in food for human consumption. We all eat a little bit of plastic every day. It’s been found in human organs, and we even inhale plastic.

INTERVIEWER: Why have we produced so much plastic?

GUEST: Plastic is actually a revolutionary material! It has unique characteristics. It’s not expensive; it’s light-weight, durable and flexible. There are a variety of different types of plastic. They have different structures, are made of different combinations of elements, and are manufactured in different ways.

INTERVIEWER: Let’s talk about the recycling of plastic then. What can be done?

GUEST: Well, recycling is an option; however, only around 10% of plastic is recycled worldwide, which means we need another solution.

INTERVIEWER: Another solution?

GUEST: Yes, plastic-eating bacteria!

INTERVIEWER: Oh, that’s revolutionary. You don’t normally think of plastic as something edible.

GUEST: True. It’s not edible for people, but there exist bacteria that can eat plastic.

INTERVIEWER: But you said we had different types of plastic.

GUEST: Again. That’s true. You see each type of plastic is degraded by a different bacterium.

INTERVIEWER: How does bacteria ACTUALLY degrade plastic?

GUEST: Roughly speaking, the microbe attaches to a polymer and colonizes it. Through pH changes, its metabolic activity causes plastic cracks which challenges the polymers physical properties. This is known as biodeterioration. Plastic becomes food for bacteria. Essentially, molecules are broken down into its original building blocks.

INTERVIEWER: When were plastic eating bacteria actually discovered?

GUEST: Plastic-eating bacteria first made headlines in 2016 when a group of researchers in Japan discovered a strain that was able to decompose PET plastics. The discovery was limited, as it exclusively degraded PET and did so at a very slow rate. Later that year, scientists in Pakistan reported a fungus capable of degrading plastic. In 2017, plastic-eating bacteria was isolated from an oil site in Texas. In 2018, scientists modified bacteria to degrade plastics within days in the UK and US.

INTERVIEWER: What’s the problem then? Why don’t we use bacteria to get rid of waste plastic?

GUEST: In order for these bacteria to be useful and applicable worldwide, there must be a way to bioengineer them to degrade plastic at rates that are hundreds or thousands of times faster. Researchers are actively looking for ways to modify or engineer these enzymes produced by bacteria to break down plastics faster.

INTERVIEWER: Thanks for sharing all that information with us.

To sum up, it appears that studying abroad has as many disadvantages as positive aspects. On the one hand, studies can be very expensive, and on the other hand, there is much more to them than gaining new knowledge, as you have numerous lessons of foreign culture and traditions. The decision whether to be educated in your own country or choose a foreign university remains a matter of personal choice and wealth.

Imagine your country without any regulations concerning drinking alcohol and using drugs. Anybody can get drugs and alcohol and use them no matter how old they are and what they do. It sounds creepy, doesn't it? This is roughly the situation with the Internet now. The Internet should be regulated. Its full regulation would bring fairness and safety under the law. Data would be protected and harmful content stopped.

Nobody should remain anonymous online. Is should be possible to identify Internet users if need be. In this way, we will be able to protect our children from abuse, stop people from spreading hateful content and prevent Internet scam. It is claimed that the Internet cannot be controlled because it does not have any physical space. The truth is it is just sound and pictures sent over large distances. There are plenty of international laws regarding trade or the seas.

It is believed that large international corporations should introduce their own regulations. They are very unlike to do that because their main aim is to make as much money as possible. Money is often made on illegal content. Can we afford to put up with terrorist and extremist content online? How can we stop it if we do not have any international regulations? What about pornography, all copyrighted information and cybercrime?

The internet must be regulated as soon as possible. It is in the best interest of us all. We do not want to let anybody drink alcohol and use drugs whenever they want. Free speech is essential and so is the safety of our children and our data.

Recycling – is it really important?

Have you ever thought about how much rubbish you throw away? We produce incredible amounts of waste every day. Throwing away rubbish means we are getting rid of our planet’s precious recources. How to solve this problem? Different ecological organisations work really hard on that.

First of all it is very important for people to realize the damage that our rubbish is doing to the environment. If we do not want to turn it into a garbage heap we ought to change our way of thinking and stop being so wasteful. We must not longer afford to throw away non-disposable containers or there will be no place, river, lake or beach free from the debris of man.

There is absolutely no excuse for throwing away our rubbish. Let’s take advantage of recycling facilities in our cities. There can be no problem if we divide our rubbish into separate containers for glass, paper and metal.

Saving some recyclable materials and taking them to recycling centres should be our basic duty. In this way we will protect our natural environ- ment. By recycling the paper, for instance, we will reduce the process of deforestation. We can also buy only ecologically safe products made from or wrapped in recycled material.

Another solution is returning cans, bottles or plastic bottle tops to a store or putting them into special containers.

Recycling is easy and we all should take part in it because ‘if you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem’.

Star actors and actresses often do not give it a single thought when they talk to their fans, who often pay a lot of attention to what their idols say. Let’s consider an example. An 8-year-old fan managed to approach Catherine Zeta-Jones and told her that she wanted to be an actress, too. The young fan didn’t quite get the response she was hoping for. She said that the star actress had turned to her, looked her up and down and said, ‘You’re pretty enough, I suppose’. The girl saw it as a turning point in her life: She started thinking constantly how everyone was judging her on her appearance.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing with regard to your advertisement which appeared in the Daily Mirror on 3rd June 2022. I would like to apply for the teaching position in your kindergarten. I believe I have the education experience and personality that an excellent teacher needs.

As the enclosed CV indicates, I graduated from Warsaw University in pedagogy with distinction. Since graduation last summer I have been working in a public nursery school. Two years ago I worked as an au pair in the USA and looked after two small kids.

My experience with taking care of small children also in my family could prove useful to working in your kindergarten. This has given me a lot of practical knowledge of working with children at different age.

I feel I am a suitable candidate for this job because I have the virtues needed to become a great teacher – I am patient, cheerful and organized. Most of all I enjoy working with kids and I love playing with them. I am also cooperative and friendly which makes me an ideal candidate for this job. I know the position you offer would be satisfying to me.

If you think my qualifications are suitable I would be grateful for the opportunity of an interview. I can also provide references (on your demand) from my school. Thank you for consideration.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

XYZ

Dear Mayor,

I am writing on behalf of all Northbank Primary School students. My friend Robert injured a leg yesterday during a PE lesson. We were playing football when he ran into a hole in the field. There are many holes in the football field. They make it hard and dangerous to play, and we love football. Robert will not be able to play for eight weeks.

Our school was built in 1930s. Since that time, it has not been properly repaired. When it rains, we cannot have our PE lessons at all because the roof in the gym leaks. We all take buckets and mops and protect the floor. If we do not do that, we will not be able to exercise inside at all.

Also, during our whole education we have not been able to do any chemistry experiments. Why? Because we do not have a chemistry lab in our school. We have never had one. This is not fair. We learn in an old run-down school without a chemistry lab. The roof leaks every time it rains and there are dangerous holes in the football field.

Please, help us, Mr Mayor. Our headmaster says he does not have money for the necessary repairs. We need all the help we can get. The repairs do not have to take place overnight. We could start with the roof, then do the chemistry lab and finally repair the football field. We would greatly appreciate your help.

Yours hopefully

Northbank Primary School students

[przykładowa odpowiedź]

Our local authorities have decided to build one. The official reason is that they need to close the traffic inside the city centre. Apparently, many people living the city centre complain about the noise and air pollution. They also want to turn some parking places into green zones.

I believe, that it’s a very bad idea. Firstly, it’s nothing more than moving problems from one place to another. Even if there are very few parking lots in the centre and the traffic decreases, tourist will not disappear. Also, the noise pollution will not be much smaller.

In my opinion, we should protest against the changes. We should gather in front of the city hall and have a massive rally, and draw up a petition against the solutions. We should also promote this idea online.

If you have any other suggestions how to solve this problem, do let me know in your comments. You can also write an email to me.

Take care,

XYZ
