A: When it comes to that competition ‘What Do You Know About English-Speaking Countries?’, we’re organising, I was thinking that we could organise it at the end of April, just after the Easter break. Let’s say Monday, April 28th. That way everyone who wants to participate will have enough time to prepare, plus those six days of the Easter break.

B: Sure. That’s a great idea. And what will the competition look like? What kind of questions should we ask?

A: I think that we can prepare between 30 and 40 multiple-choice questions, each with four options. It can’t be too easy, though, so at least some of the questions must be hard. I’d also add one open question. A short composition.

B: I don’t think it’s a good idea. We have only 45 minutes to hold the competition. With a composition, it would have to be at least one hour.

A: You’re right. So let’s stick to multiple choice questions. What do we actually expect the participants to know? I have a PDF book on English-speaking countries. It’s in English and has approximately 100 pages. I think we could attach it to the rules and regulations when we send the information about the competition.

B: Okay. Sure. And what about the awards?

A: I talked to a few teachers and the three best students can get good marks in English. We also have some money to buy one book for each of those three students.

B: Books? What are you talking about? Students don’t want any more books. We need to think of something more attractive. What about a trip to London or New York?

A: Are you serious? Who’s going to pay for that?

B: Let’s look for sponsors.

A: OK.

In the picture, I can see a stadium full of people. It looks like a football stadium. Around the football pitch, there’s also a running track. On the track, there’re people in orange and green vests. They look like maintenance workers. The football field is empty, so there’s probably a break at the moment. It’s an open-air stadium and all spectators are wearing warm clothes – coats, jackets, trousers, and hats. So it’s probably cold outside. Late autumn or winter. There’s also one person in the foreground who is taking pictures. He may be a journalist or someone hired by the organizers of the event to take photos which will later be posted on their website or social media profiles.

1. Why are there so many people taking part in this event?

There are so many people taking part in this event because it’s probably an important football match, maybe a league game or an international competition. Football is very popular, and fans love to support their teams, even in cold weather. Some spectators might be there for the atmosphere, enjoying the excitement of the crowd, while others could be journalists or photographers covering the event. The people in vests are likely staff members ensuring everything runs smoothly during the break. Big sports events like this bring people together, creating a sense of community and excitement.

2. How important are PE lessons at school?

I didn’t like doing sports during PE lessons because nine times out of ten we played team sports such as basketball or volleyball and I don’t really like them. I prefer athletics – running, for example. In general, physical education is very important. Without PE lessons, some students wouldn’t do any sports at all.

3. Tell me about the last time you watched a live sporting event or a sporting event on TV.

I think the last time I went to a sporting event was last summer. I got free tickets from a friend of mine who got sick and couldn’t go. So I took my brother and my sister, and together we went to see a horse-racing competition. I must admit that it was really interesting. It was the first time I had seen such a competition. I’m a big fan of horse racing now.

[przykładowa wypowiedź, przykładowe pytania egzaminatora]

In my opinion, the most interesting way of spending your holiday is sightseeing. You can visit some cities with ancient ruins, beautiful buildings from previous centuries. You can appreciate the beauty of architecture and visit museums in which you get to know more about important and interesting people from the past, or historical events. That way, you can broaden your horizons and your knowledge. And I think it’s really exciting. While walking around the town, you’ll also see how people in different regions in your country or in other countries live.

I don’t think that there’s anything interesting in spending your holiday on a sunbed next to the hotel swimming pool. Surrounded by dozens of noisy people and children running around. There’s no fun in it. You can’t learn anything interesting. It’s a very passive way of spending your holiday.

And I wouldn’t recommend ziplining or other form of extreme holiday, either. That’s because only small percentage of people will find it interesting. And for most people it’ll be too dangerous. And when you go on holiday, I think that the main purpose is always to relax. And that certainly isn’t a way to do it.

1. What are the benefits of doing extreme sports?

Extreme sports can be beneficial because they give people an adrenaline rush and a sense of excitement. They also help build confidence and overcome fears, as trying something challenging pushes personal limits. Additionally, many extreme sports, like rock climbing or surfing, require physical strength and coordination, so they help improve fitness. Some people also enjoy the sense of freedom and adventure that comes with these activities, making their holidays more memorable.

2. Do you prefer the mountains or the seaside? Why?

I prefer the seaside. That’s because I like sunbathing and swimming in the sea. Also, I think that if you’re tired, the best way to relax is just to lie on the beach. Some people find hiking relaxing, but the seaside works best for me.

3. Why do you think so many people like winter sports such as skiing, snowboarding or cross-country skiing?

I think it's because of the thrill of sliding down a snowy slope. The higher, the better. Because it adds excitement and a sense of success and achievement. Besides, it involves staying in the open air; it’s usually fresh air in the mountains, with beautiful landscapes.

4. What are the best ideas to spend your time during a staycation holiday? Why?

A staycation can be a great way to relax and explore your own city. Visiting local museums or historical sites is a good idea because it helps you learn more about your area’s culture and history. Another option is to go for a nature walk or bike ride in a nearby park, which is both refreshing and good for your health. You can also try new hobbies, like cooking or painting, to make your time at home more interesting. A staycation is a great opportunity to slow down, enjoy your surroundings, and do things you normally don’t have time for.
