[przykładowy dialog; A – uczeń, B – egzaminator]

A: So, let’s talk about the flat we want to rent in Edinburgh. Winter term starts in October, so I think it’d be good to rent a flat by the end of August. First location. In my opinion, it should be near an underground station. There’re a lot of traffic jams in the city, so counting only on buses and trams wouldn’t be sensible. By using the subway, we’ll always be on time.

B: Correct. But I think having a bus or tram stop nearby is also important. Just in case.

A: Okay. And how big do you think the flat should be? Before we answer that question, I believe we must ask ourselves if we want any other roommates? I definitely don’t. I don’t want more people in the flat. You never know if they’re tidy, whether or not they pay the bills on time, or if they party a lot and bring some noisy friends over.

B: I agree. Just the two of us is enough. On the other hand, we’ll have to pay a lot of money. Do you think we’ll manage?

A: Let’s just look around and see how much money we’ll need monthly.

A: Alright, the size of the flat now. I think there should be two bedrooms. One for each of us. And a separate kitchen. And, of course, a bathroom and a decent hall. Approximately 45-55 m2.

B: Wouldn’t you like a third bedroom. Actually, a kind of living room where we can hang out with our friends.

A: Well, I surely would. A three-bedroom flat will be quite expensive. Don’t you think? I have £1,000 to cover all my costs: rent, all additional expenses such as electricity, water, gas, internet. And having an additional room would add another £500 to the rent monthly, wouldn’t it?

B: Oh, yes. You’re right. That’ll probably be too expensive.

[przykładowa wypowiedź, przykładowe pytania egzaminatora]

I can see a lot of people. Some of them are holding their hands up; someone is taking pictures with their smartphone. It could be a concert taking place at night. Possibly, an open-air concert. That’s because in the foreground there are a lot of people who are standing and waving their hands. And it looks like some of them are recording. Plus, there’s a lot of confetti in the air. And somewhere in the background there’re some square-shaped lights. And they resemble the lights that I’ve seen many times on the stage, behind the singers or other type of performers. But this place could also be a very big club with people just having fun and a DJ in the background.

1. Why have these people decided to take part in this concert?

These people have probably decided to take part in the concert because they enjoy live music and want to experience their favourite artists performing in person. Concerts create a unique atmosphere where people can sing, dance, and share the excitement with others. Some might be there to have fun with friends, while others see it as a chance to escape their daily routine and enjoy a special event. The energy, lights, and live performances make it a memorable experience that you can’t get from just listening to music at home.

2. Do you prefer going out with your friends or staying at home at weekends?

It depends. If I’m tired I prefer to stay at home, watch a movie, a TV series, read a book. But if I’m not, I really enjoy going out with my friends. We go to the restaurants, to the cinema. Sometimes even to the theatre or opera. And once a month we stay at home together and play some board games.

3. Tell me about the last concert, festival or other celebration you took part it.

The last festival I took part in was a summer festival last July. It was organized in my neighbourhood. At the last weekend of July. On Saturday, there was a small concert in the evening. There were some group activities for kids, screenings of some old movies. You could also buy a piece of cake, a coffee, or even have dinner.

[przykładowa wypowiedź, przykładowe pytania egzaminatora]

If I were to travel directly to Greece, alone, with my friends or family, and stay there in one place for a week or two, I’d definitely choose a plane. It’s very fast. It take between one and a half and two and a half hours to get there from Poland. It’s quite comfortable as well. When you fly, you don’t feel you are moving. It feels like you’re sitting in one place. And nowadays flights can be very cheap, too. If you book the tickets early enough, you can get a reasonably priced ticket. The only disadvantage of travelling by plane is the time you waste at the airport: checking in, security control, and later waiting for boarding.

I wouldn’t like to travel by train because I think that these days there are no direct train connections between Poland and countries such as Greece, Italy or Spain. It’s not really comfortable to change trains. It can also be quite stressful because if one train is late, you can miss all the others. And you can get stuck in the middle of Serbia or Bulgaria.

I wouldn’t choose a car as a means of transport either. That’s because it’s very tiring to drive for 30 hours by car to Greece. Even if there’s more than one person who has a driving license and is willing to take turns with you. Also, you need to find a place to park your car – always the same problem.

1. What are the pros and cons of travelling by plane?

Travelling by plane has many advantages. It’s the fastest way to reach distant destinations, like Greece, in just a few hours. It’s also quite comfortable because you don’t feel the movement like in a car or train. Another benefit is that plane tickets can be very cheap if you book them early. However, there are also some disadvantages. The biggest one is the time wasted at the airport, including check-in, security control, and waiting for boarding. Sometimes flights get delayed, which can be frustrating. Despite these drawbacks, flying is still the best option for long-distance travel.

2. Which means of transport is in your opinion the most eco-friendly? Why?

Vehicles that use electricity seem to be eco-friendly: underground, trams, and electric buses in some cities. And some people also have hybrid or electric cars. Let’s be honest. The most eco-friendly vehicle is the bicycle. If more people rode bicycles, our environment would be much better off.

3. How can we encourage people to use public transport?

I use public transport. Mostly buses and trams. In my city there’s no underground. In the city centre, it’s much cheaper and faster to move around by bus or tram. Especially now, when the fuel is so expensive. Plus. it’s more ecological. Public transport should be cheap. Travel cards should be much cheaper. We should constantly remind people of the benefits of using public transportation. There should be a high-quality app with all possible information: bus stops, times of departures, routes etc, tickets.

4. How important is it to have a driving license nowadays? Why?

It depends where you live. If it’s a village with hardly any public transport and no buses or trains that allow you to get to bigger cities, having a driving license is very important. But if you live in a big city, where there’s a lot of traffic jams, but well-organized public transport, it’s not necessary. It’s good to have a driving licence, for instance, for your job.
