It was an overwhelming decision to change the place where I’m residing in right now, but it’s turned out it won’t work out like that anymore. To be honest, I’m bewildered, because I had an idea that living in a dormitory would make myself evolve in a more gregarious person. In fact, it did somehow partly. I just thought it would do more than that, so I’m down in the dumps a little bit now. Since I am a kind of person who can’t deal with such things easily, I’m even more reserved than before I put my foot here for the first time. But then, one day, it became obvious that my destiny is to relocate to one of my acquaintances’ apartment. Of course, the quality of my life will improve, for sure. Even staying in a brand-new student bedsit is incomparably better than my previous one, but that’s not the case here. The main reason was the fact that living in a hall of residence was not in my price range anymore. Even tough, it was intended for low-income students, still I’m not able to afford it now, since the prices doubled in the recent year due to inflation. Optimistically speaking, however, because of my removal, my self-independence might finally evolve for the better! Keep your fingers crossed for that.

A commuter belt is typically a region situated within a reasonable commuting distance from a major city, often characterized by a mix of suburban and rural areas. People residing in these areas usually work in the city but choose to live outside. Statistically, such factors as lower housing costs, a quieter lifestyle, and sometimes better schools and amenities play a big role. Living in a commuter belt can offer a higher quality of life with less noise, cleaner air, and access to green spaces. Commuters often appreciate the more relaxed pace of life and a greater sense of community. Commuter belts allow commuters to enjoy a quieter and less congested environment. This might lead to an improved work-life balance, as they can escape the hustle and bustle of the city after work. But, of course, it does not involve everybody. On the downside, commuters living in these areas often face longer travel times. Data shows that people in commuter belts tend to spend more time commuting, which seems to impact their fixed or usual way of doing things and, I suppose, physical and mental health and happiness, as well.

Interviewer: Starting up as a self-publisher of any content has gained its popularity in recent years. Therefore, with us today, in the studio, we have a well-renown self-publisher – George Lewinsky. George, introduce us to the topic of your talk.

George: Hi Susan, hello the listeners. When it comes to self-publishing, it can be a challenging and competitive battle. It often takes time and persistence to gain recognition and build a reader base. Stay open to feedback, continually improve your craft, and be patient as you work towards your publishing goals. Get an insight into my “Encyclopedia of self-publishing” which has just been released and is available on demand in online bookshops.

Interviewer: A good start! Tell us more about how and where to start?

George: First things first, you should clearly define your publishing goals. Are you writing a novel, a non-fiction book, a collection of poems, or something else? What is your target audience? What do you hope to achieve with your self-published work?

Interviewer: Ok, we’ve noted it down. What’s next? Write, edit, and polish your content thoroughly, I guess?

George: Remember that the last words in your book may say “the end”, but in fact, it’s just the small brick of your publishing process here. Now, consider seeking professional editing and proofreading services to ensure your work is of high quality. A well-designed book cover is crucial for attracting readers, as well. At the same time, determine your budget for self-publishing - consider such costs as editing, cover design, formatting, marketing, and publishing platforms.

Interviewer: What do you mean by saying publishing platforms?

George: Select a self-publishing platform to release your work. Each has its own advantages and target audiences, so research to find the best fit for your needs. There are also certain platform's instructions to upload your content. This typically includes adding book details, book cover, description, and pricing. Make sure your book is available in the formats you want (e-book, paperback, hardcover, etc.).

Interviewer: When it comes to pricing and royalties, what’s important to know more specifically?

George: For sure, you need to keep in mind the balance between affordability and fair compensation for your work. Each platform has different royalty structures, so be sure to understand the terms. What’s more, if you're self-publishing a physical book, consider using print-on-demand services. This means your books are printed as they are ordered, reducing upfront costs and eliminating the need for inventory storage. Also, consider copyright protection for your work. You may want to register your copyright to secure your intellectual property, to avoid any copyright infringement and, as a result, the money lost on reselling or downloading of your content without your consent.

Interviewer: Ok, good to know. What is the best way to promote your book?

George:You can do it through various marketing channels. This includes creating a website or an author page, utilizing social media, reaching out to book bloggers and reviewers, and possibly investing in advertising. Building a reader email list can also be beneficial. Encourage readers to leave their feedback on platforms like Amazon. They can significantly impact the visibility and credibility of your book. Last, but not least, interact with your readers through social media or author events. Building a community around your work can be valuable for long-term success. Surprise your followees with some instagrammable content and freebies. It also matters!

Interviewer: Thank you, George. It was pleasure to talk to you.

Nowadays, scammers might try to trick us into gathering our personal data in various ways. Among them, we can differentiate three most similar-looking types of scam, namely phishing, smishing and vishing. Even though they may seem to bear a striking resemblance to each other, each of them involves a different source of communication with a tricked person. Phishing, for example, depends on click baiting, in which you’re persuaded to click on a fraudulent link in emails. Smishing, on the other hand, is typical of links, but this time sent in text messages. However, all the voicemails and calls fall under the name of vishing.

Some people say trolling is not that bad when you treat it as an easy way to make money. At least, I had thought like that since the beginning of my working career. Writing fake or insulting messages in Internet chat rooms, blogs and posts to make other people angry wasn’t intended to do a lot of harm, they said. But, in fact, it did. I had this one task to troll one celebrity who had achieved a great success in the music industry. I did my job, and now I regret it. Still, I deal with this job, but I’m convinced it’s not justifiable to explain doing it, even due to easy money, which makes me even more miserable.

Risking your life by lying in an unusual or dangerous place to take a photograph to put on social networking sites is called planking. It’s strange how little imagination people have just for the sake of gaining popularity. Unfortunately, I was one of such attention-seekers. My self-esteem was low at that time. I really longed for being in the limelight. Therefore, I dared to climb the peak of the highest tree in the park and took a snapshot just to take up the challenge given by my pseudo-friends. The moment I fell off the tree and broke my arm was the moment of the big change of my attitude towards friendship and self-respect. Please, do not let people take advantage of your life as I did. I would’ve never done it again.

Clickjacking is the practice of adding hidden hyperlinks to documents on the Internet, causing users to make purchases, perform actions on social networking sites, etc. without their knowledge. I really can’t stand such crimes and, to be honest, I don’t know why people still get tricked into such things. A week ago, my mum was a victim of clickjacking, even though she had warned me thousands times against it. She was browsing some clothes via online shopping. She thought she made a purchase by clicking on this shopping trolley icon. In fact, she paid for a totally different thing, wasting a lot of money. Shame on her! How could she have done that without consulting it with me?

Phubbers are people who you spend time with and who give attention to their mobile phones, instead of giving it to you. Sarah and Michael were my friends, who had always ignored me, using their phones, while I was talking to them in the park. One day, when the upcoming local photography contest was announced, I saw an opportunity. My entry won the contest – the image capturing the essence of the park, highlighting the beauty that had been ignored by phubbing individuals like Sarah and Michael. I’ve learned that sometimes negative behaviour can be beneficial, at least for one side.

PAYEYE

So far, our payment methods have included cash, credit and debit cards, online banking, cryptocurrencies or even contactless mobile wallets on your phone. Still, scientists have been looking for a type of another contactless payment that would facilitate our lifestyle even more than that. And here it comes. An innovative payment thanks to which you can be scatter-brained without any repercussions. So feel free, as you wish, to forget your ID or credit card. Even your smartphone is allowed to be forgotten. Although introduced recently, based in Wrocław, a company PayEye has launched a unique service, bound to be used on a worldwide scale. It operates under the supervision of the Polish Financial Supervision Authority. After the pilot launch, the fintech partner network has more than 20 points in Wrocław and in the cities close to it. The system is to be extended for sure. At this moment, the life in some parts of the world seems to be easier – not only food deliveries, but also for other everyday activities, you can already pay with a single glance.

What about the payment processing? Just approach the terminal and scan your face. How and why does it work? The iris of the eye is unique, so when you want to make a transaction, the system identifies pattern of the iris and facial biometrics and convert them into a numerical code, which are assigned to their owner and his or her bank account. That’s why, it’s a must to scan your eyes and face with the free dedicated app before you start your fun with it. So, don’t wait and download it, create an account, take a selfie and connect your payment card. As simple as that.

However, be careful! Although the uniqueness of an iris should increase security, there are still some threats or obstacles to using it. To name a few, think about specially designed lenses with the copy of one’s iris to be used illegally. We know, however, that recently PayEye has been officially certified and simultaneously guaranteed with a special document, as a result of a series of tests which prove it to be error- and possible cybercrime-free. But still there is another thing to consider. What about a matter of your deteriorating eyesight and its impact on the system? It involves studying and calculating as well. No matter if the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, for sure our life and all its aspects are being under constant evolution. We need to be ready for that.
